In Monster Hunter Wilds, there will again be a main story that you can follow while hunting monsters. It’s even more fun doing it with friends. However, it is not so easy, as there are a few hurdles.
Monster Hunter Wilds can be played simultaneously with up to 3 other hunters, just like its predecessor Monster Hunter World. This way, you can experience all hunts together and stand as a group against the giant monsters.
Most monsters are introduced sequentially within the story and presented through exciting cutscenes. They must be unlocked gradually. That’s the biggest catch if you want to play the story together with your friends.
Playing the story in co-op
Watch the sequences first, then invite
Why is it not so easy to play the story in multiplayer? The game allows you to group up before starting a quest, but once you begin the quest, you will initially be separated.
You will need to find the monster and watch the cutscene before you can invite each other back and join the quest. All players must finish the sequence first. Only then can you complete the hunt together. If there are more sequences after that, your group will be separated again, and the game starts anew with the next story quest.
Connection groups make it easier
How can I best invite my friends? If you want to play with your friends, you need to invite them to your group. This is best done through connection groups, as it doesn’t matter if you are in the same lobby at the moment. This way, you stay together after returning from a quest, which makes it easier to complete consecutive quests together.
If you are in a connection group, you will always be automatically notified when you can join a friend’s quest.
You can find out how to do that here:
There are also other ways you can play Monster Hunter Wilds with your friends. Unfortunately, concerning the story, there is currently no other way than to watch the cutscenes and then invite friends to your quest when everyone is done.
Story co-op with different progress
Can I also play the story with my friends if one of us is already further along? Yes, that is possible. The one whose story you want to continue opens the respective quest and invites all others.
If you are far apart in the story quests, you should ensure to wear armor suitable for the rank – meaning those who are further along should downgrade their equipment a bit and rely on armors and weapons from the earlier monsters. Unless you want to give your behind friends an advantage and bring the enemies down faster to help them catch up.
