Level 2: Essentials for 1-Day Events & Taverns

Once you have your basics together, that is your outfit and the essentials for logistics, you can start to think about the equipment for your first 1-Day Event or your first LARP Tavern.

The following points are recommendations from me and my LARP crew. A lot of this depends on weather and season. However, I certainly donโ€™t want to withhold them from you.

Here too, we have provided some thoughts for you under each point; just expand them.

Hygiene & Body Care

A whole day in the game and on the move, possibly even exposed to the elements. You donโ€™t need a full shower setup yet, but a few hygiene and body care basics wonโ€™t hurt.

Hand Sanitizer

Depending on the location of your event, the toilet situation may be complex. There might be only cold water for handwashing. Perhaps there are only proper public toilets. Maybe there is no soap available. My personal highlight are mobile toilets that are emptied once a day.

For your own comfort, I recommend packing a hand sanitizer. If you want to go one step further, you are also well advised to have a surface disinfectant or disinfectant wipes.

Wet Wipes

Wet wipes can be used for a quick wash on hot days. If you’ve chosen war paint or makeup, I recommend makeup remover wipes.

Tissues

It doesnโ€™t matter if itโ€™s cold season, allergy season, or you just want something to wipe your hands โ€“ one or two packs of tissues wonโ€™t take up much space and are always helpful.

Lip Care

Especially in midsummer, when the sun is blazing, itโ€™s worth having a lip care product with sun protection factor with you. In winter, it can protect against the cold. By the way: Sunny days in winter with a closed snow cover can cause similar sunburns as hot summer days.

Sunscreen

As soon as the sun comes out, you should arm yourself with sunscreen. Personally, I prefer to use 50+, as I tend to forget reapplying and also have a rather light skin type. Choose your sun protection factor as needed.

But: Keep the sunscreen handy. A severe sunburn after the LARP is no fun.

Anti-Tick and Mosquito Spray

If youโ€™re outdoors during tick and mosquito season, I can only highly recommend an appropriate insect repellent spray. Sure, you wonโ€™t smell like roses. But itโ€™s better to smell a bit stronger than to go home with 5,000 bites or even Lyme disease.

Health & Comfort

Self-Heating Insoles

Self-heating insoles are an absolute game-changer on cold days. They keep your feet warm even at minus five degrees. At least for a short time.

This is important, as cold and wet feet are one of the biggest fun killers in LARP. Right behind inconsiderate fellow players and rule lawyers.

Blister Plasters

Having a few blister plasters on hand is always a good idea. Youโ€™re on your feet all day in the same pair of shoes. Sometimes even through the woods and over meadows, up and down hills. Even in the best shoes, you can get blisters.

Medications for the Day

Pack all the medications you need to take regularly โ€“ if you have any. Take them as well, and if time management becomes difficult due to all the fun, itโ€™s better to set a phone alarm.

Itโ€™s also worth packing medications for contingencies. For example, something for diarrhea, electrolytes, an antihistamine, but also plasters and disinfectant.

Technology & Gadgets

Power Bank & Phone Charging Cable

Depending on how long your day LARP lasts and how you are traveling, a power bank and corresponding charging cables for your electronics are almost always worth it. Most importantly, you should be able to charge your phone.

Cup

Water hoses or disguised bottles are already included in the basics, and cups are suggested. Itโ€™s definitely worth having your own mug with you. Possible materials are ceramic, metal, or wood.

Choose something in a capacity of your choice and keep in mind that the cup also says something about the character.

Flashlight(s)

Also here: In a nighttime emergency, itโ€™s always better that someone has a flashlight. It doesnโ€™t have to be heavy or large. But if you can fit a little light in your bag, you can always provide yourself with light.

On page 1, you will find the basics needed for any LARP event. On the next page, however, everything that is needed for multi-day larger cons is listed.
