Before he became one of the greatest superheroes in the MCU as Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. originally wanted to star in a well-known DC film – as a villain.
With the role of Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. delighted numerous Marvel fans, his improvised line “I am Iron Man” remains legendary to this day.
But before the actor shone in his red-gold superhero suit, he actually had quite different plans and wanted to go to the competitor DC to become a nasty villain.
Robert Downey Jr. saw himself as Scarecrow, Christopher Nolan did not
Robert Downey Jr. shared in a Q&A after an Oppenheimer screening that he once met with Christopher Nolan to discuss a role in a well-known DC film.
It was about Batman Begins. But instead of donning the Dark Knight’s suit, the actor wanted to become a villain and suggested himself for Scarecrow.
Fully convinced that he was suited for the role, he met with the director. However, the actor quickly realized that he didn’t actually have any interest in him as a DC villain:
“He was polite and everything, but when someone is like that, you quickly realize that the [conversation] is going nowhere,” Robert Downey Jr. said.

In the end, the role of Scarecrow went to Cillian Murphy, with whom Robert Downey Jr. most recently worked in the blockbuster Oppenheimer.
Although fans celebrated the actor as Iron Man so much, we will never see Robert Downey Jr. in his iconic role again, as Kevin Feige revealed in an interview:
