Sound Design: A Journey Back to the Good Old Days
I also like the sound design of HoKW very much. While I cannot judge the English voice-over yet, the music immediately transported me back to the good old MMORPG days.
There was a moment, about 3 to 4 hours into the game, where I felt like I did as a teenager in Cabal Online, Metin2, or Jade Dynasty. The somewhat generic rock music in the background complements the chatter in the village while some players shop at the stores and mingle with the local NPCs.
I hadn’t experienced this feeling for a long time, and the moment delighted me so much that I had to share it here – kudos, Honor of Kings: World.
Combat System: Two Heroes are Better than One
Enough of the nostalgic memories and let’s move to the cool features. As already mentioned, HoKW has a completely different approach to classes and builds than the genre usually dictates. It’s something like the LoL MMORPG for Honor of Kings.
Important to know in advance: At the beginning, you create your own character, which you will play permanently. You don’t suddenly transform into one of the well-known MOBA champions (that only happens optionally via cosmetic skins). Instead of selecting a classic warrior
, you simply equip the abilities and weapons of a specific melee fighter from the MOBA.
If you feel like a different playstyle, you keep your character but seamlessly switch to the skills of Champion C or D. But so that you don’t just press 3 skills per battle, you always play a combination of 2 characters simultaneously.
So, I’m a melee fighter with a sword and at the same time a healer with vortex AoE, perfectly pulling my enemies together to then chop them to pieces with the sword. This works much better than I expected and allows for virtually endless combinations.
Honor of Kings has 130 champions, of which 11 are currently available as playable characters in the MMORPG. This already results in 55 different combinations in Season 0. However, you don’t combine everything with everything.
I oriented myself toward the standard build and remained with the sword and AoE vortex healer hybrid. However, the community has already delved deeper and usually combines a support class with a damage dealer – for example, a tank with a DPS or a healer with a DPS.
Filling a role twice is somewhat pointless since everyone has a tank or healer as a backup who supports the group, and for many elements in the game, you must also deal decent damage on your own.
