MeinMMO author Irina Moritz wants to use Amazon Prime Day 2020 to make a major investment: her first television in 10 years. Therefore, it must meet a whole series of requirements.
I, the “TV Boomer”: I admit it here: I haven’t had a television in my house for the last 10 years. Before my high school graduation, my PC desk was basically the “all-round entertainment platform”:
- I could play games on it
- Watch movies and series, especially since the rise of Netflix and other streaming services
- On YouTube, there was “entertainment for nerds” in the form of meme videos, Let’s Plays, etc.
- There was more than enough reading material on various websites
- In forums and on social media, you could exchange ideas with people about your interests
- Thanks to voice chats, you could stay in touch with friends
Even the consoles could be connected to monitors via HDMI. Of course, it wasn’t a “big-screen experience”, but that was more than enough for me. As a student, I couldn’t afford large flat screens anyway.
After high school was over and my university time began, big purchases like a 4K television weren’t an option either. Especially before the price crash in 2014-2015, one often had to sell a liver and a kidney just to afford one.
However, with the release of the next-gen consoles, I actually want to buy a television for the first time in 10 years. And it will not just be any television.
Next Gen as an excuse for an upgrade
What I’ve considered: Some of you might know it: as a console gamer, you sometimes prioritize things differently than people who don’t have consoles at home.
For instance, my uncle insisted on having not only a 4K resolution and high color quality, but also the best smart TV, ideally with what felt like a 15-year Sky subscription. Whether the device supports HDMI 2.1 or what the input lag is didn’t concern him at all.
But those are exactly the things you should pay attention to as a console gamer when buying a television if you want optimal performance for your consoles. Accordingly, I, a clueless “TV Boomer”, had to read up for quite some time before making the decision.
The goal was: I want to use the transition from the current console generation to the next as an opportunity to make a future investment. Therefore, the new 4K television can certainly cost a bit more than I would usually spend.
This will be the television: The new television should primarily be optimal for gaming, which is why I’ve focused on the OLEDCX model from LG. It can be found on almost every list of the best OLED televisions of 2020, and we at MeinMMO recommend it as one of the top TVs for PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Since I have pre-ordered the PS5 from the two next-gen consoles, the television will be used for the Sony console at least for now. It actually offers everything one could wish for in a gaming TV:
- It is an OLED TV
- HDMI 2.1
- Supports both G-Sync and FreeSync
- 120 Hz natively and features like VRR for low input lag
- HDR10, HDR10 Pro image enhancement system, as well as Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos
Especially the OLED was an important requirement for me. OLED televisions offer better black levels thanks to their technology, and the first game I will play on the PS5 in November will be the remake of Demon’s Souls. The game is known not only for its difficulty but also for its dark setting and can directly take advantage of the OLED television.
Update at midnight, October 13: While the Prime Day does not feature the C model, the B model from LG is on offer. I will have to think about that.
- 4K OLED Smart TV mit 139 cm (55 Zoll) Bildschirmdiagonale, Außenmaße 122,8 cm x 73,8 cm, VESA Norm: 300 x 200 mm
- Prozessor: α9 Gen3 Prozessor mit AI Sound Pro, AI Picture Pro und AI Brightness optimiert die Bilddarstellung auf Basis von Deep-Learning-Algorithmen
- Bild und Ton: Optimale HDR-Unterstützung durch 4K Cinema HDR (Dolby Vision IQ, HDR10 Pro, HLG), Dolby Atmos-fähiges 2.2 Soundsystem mit 40 Watt
- Tunertyp und Konnektivität: Twin Triple Tuner: 2x (DVB-T2 HD/-C/-S2) mit Watch & Record, LAN, WLAN, Bluetooth
- Smart TV: webOS 5.0 (AI ThinQ) mit Google Assistant und Alexa-Integration, Apple AirPlay 2-kompatibel, Home Dashboard, Magic Remote-Fernbedienung

This is what the television will be used for: But since the 4K television is supposed to be a future investment, it will naturally not only be used for the PS5. Even though the hardware of the Switch is not designed for playing games with spectacular graphics, it will also be connected to the television.
It would also be really cool to try out my PC on the television. So far, I’ve always played on corresponding monitors with my PC. I have to say, though, that I am really looking forward to seeing how Hellblade 2 would look with the Xbox Game Pass on such a 4K television.
And if I feel like being funny, I will fail a round in the raids of Final Fantasy XIV. That’s bound to be even more frustrating in 4K.
Good opportunity on Prime Day and not just because of discounts
That’s why it will (hopefully) be bought on Prime Day: It’s quite obvious that you attempt to make expensive purchases on a day when many items will be discounted in an online store. Why buy a 4K television for €2,000 when it could be €1,700?
However, price is not the only reason why I want to try to take advantage of Prime Day. If it were only about the money, one could also wait until Black Friday and Cyber Week. There could be even better deals then. However, this year, Black Friday falls on November 27, so after the release of the two new consoles.
I am also sure that I will not be the only person wanting to get a 4K upgrade. Therefore, the television should be ordered as soon as possible to avoid potential supply bottlenecks or long delivery times. That’s why Prime Day suits perfectly.
Of course, this is somewhat a matter of luck. Perhaps there will be no deals for my desired TV on Prime Day, or maybe Amazon’s servers will be overwhelmed and all televisions will be gone 30 seconds later.
But it’s worth a try. And even if it doesn’t work out, the TV will be bought because I want to enjoy the next gen to the fullest.
Will you use Prime Day to make an expensive purchase, or would you rather wait for Black Friday? When Prime Day starts, you can find out in our article.
