The German Twitch streamer Kevin “Papaplatte” Teller (27) doubled his viewing figures thanks to the global r/Place event and teamed up with the world-renowned streamer Félix “xQc” Lengyel (25). How this twist came about is told by MeinMMO.
What is r/Place and how did it originate? This extraordinary phenomenon emerged in April 2017 on the social media platform Reddit and had an initial duration of 4 days. The idea behind r/Place on Reddit was quite simple, but the impact captivated countless users.
Reddit users were given the opportunity to participate in a massive community experiment, working together on a gigantic digital canvas and painting images pixel by pixel.
The canvas measured 1,000 x 1,000 pixels and was edited in real-time by an unlimited number of users. Each Reddit user was allowed to place one pixel every five minutes.
What started as an innocent gathering of colorful pixels quickly transformed into a global collaboration and an epic competition. Reddit users formed alliances, made pacts, and fiercely fought for their creations.
Many streamers used this event to pit their communities against each other, ally with other streamer colleagues, and show their viewers a unique competition.
This year, r/Place entered its third round and started on July 20, 2023. There, a rivalry ensued between the German streamer Papaplatte and xQc, who had long been the undisputed number one on Twitch.
Papaplatte breaks his own viewer records
What does Papaplatte have to do with r/Place? In the midst of this creative chaos, the well-known German Twitch streamer Papaplatte found a unique opportunity to grow his audience. He cleverly used r/Place as a stage to draw attention to his Twitch channel.
Through exciting entertainment and the support of his loyal community, Papaplatte managed to more than double his viewer count. He defended many artworks of German streamers with his fans, but also took under his protection the Pride flag and other pixel creations.
Last month, Papaplatte averaged 17,250 viewers (via sullygnome). However, in a spectacular stream on July 24, 2023, he drew the attention of over 100,000 viewers and set a new personal viewer record.
As a result, the German streamer slipped to number 1 in the German Twitch charts and ranked fourth among the most-watched streamers worldwide (via sullygnome).
Papaplatte vs. xQc – An epic competition
How did the competition between Papaplatte and xQc unfold? The rapid growth of Papaplatte on Twitch did not go unnoticed by the world-famous streamer xQc. When xQc attacked other Twitch streamers in r/Place, Papaplatte decided to defend his fellow competitors. This led to a rivalry between the two, resulting in some exciting hours.
xQc asked for the names and coordinates of the mysterious protector to attack it. It didn’t take long before he attacked the dragon built by Papaplatte. This led to a rivalry between the two, resulting in some exciting hours.
But despite xQc’s worldwide fame and his huge follower count of nearly 12 million followers on Twitch, he ultimately had to capitulate against Papaplatte and his dedicated community. “I was sure I would make it. Chat, I let you down! I’m sorry! We can’t do it,” xQc said in his stream to his fanbase.
The capitulation of xQc is included here:
How did the alliance come about? xQc recognized the impressive potential of the German streamer and his community. He unexpectedly proposed an alliance to Papaplatte. Together with their communities, Papaplatte and xQc decided to unite their artistic talents.
Together they created a spectacular pixel work above the Turkish flag – an underwater world full of familiar characters from SpongeBob. The former star became Patrick Star, and soon SpongeBob, Sandy, Squidward, and many other underwater inhabitants joined in.
Why did the alliance contract raise questions? As a symbolic gesture of peace, xQc sent Papaplatte a contract stipulating that the German streamer could no longer attack the pixel works of xQc. However, a curious twist occurred: instead of signing with his real name, Papaplatte signed the contract with the name of his streamer colleague Rumathra, namely “Wieland Welte“.
The signing raised some questions, but both streamers downplayed it as a joke and emphasized the unity and respect they felt for each other and for their communities.
The epic confrontation against xQc showed that true strength is not always measured solely by numbers but also by the loyalty and commitment of an engaged community.
