I didn’t know I needed a pirate city-building game – Then I played Corsair Cove on Steam

With Corsair Cove, another promising game for pirate fans launches on Steam in 2026, and MeinMMO editor Alex is one of them. He immediately fell in love with the demo and sunk over 10 hours in it.

As someone born near the Baltic Sea and who was confronted early on with cool sailing ships in the harbor, I could only become a pirate fan. It’s clear. Accordingly, I am always looking for games that perfectly capture the feeling of freedom, adventure, and the vastness of the sea – of course not without huge sailing ships, a bunch of rum, and a rough tone.

However, truly good games with this setting are few and far between. Hardly any have managed to capture me completely. Recently, Windrose was on my list and kept me engaged for a few hours. But my colleague Benedict Grothaus then raved in his preview report about a demo on Steam and the opportunity to try it out: Corsair Cove.

Since Benedict has already presented the features and mechanics extensively in his preview report, I will take a different angle. If you want to know more about how it plays, check out Benedict’s article:

Corsair Cove is a construction and strategy game with a pirate setting that is supposed to bring some special features. It is said to resemble the famous city-building series Anno and allow players to build their own Tortuga, explore the sea, and engage in naval battles. So far, so cool the premise.

Although city-building games are generally not necessarily my regular favorites, in the past, games like Anno, Against the Storm, or Pioneers of Pagonia have provided me with some really fun after-work hours.

So I decided to give the demo a chance. What started as a chance quickly turned into somehow 10 hours, and now I definitely want much more of it.

Who is writing here? MeinMMO editor Alex particularly enjoys role-playing games and MMORPGs and absorbs everything maritime like a sponge. Pirate games, of course, cannot be missing, and he has enthusiastically delved into classics like Sea of Thieves, Risen, AC: Black Flag, Skull & Bones, and Co. Strategy and city-building games have been rather rare in his repertoire of games with many hours of play, but that could soon change.

“Finally a place where I can moisten my gills”

What makes Corsair Cove so special? Right from the start of the demo, I noticed the style positively. The colors, the interface, the story sequences: Everything seemed to be made with a lot of love, and the voice acting reminded me of classics like Anno. The dialogues and narratives immediately immerse you in the rough interactions between the privateers and pull you into the action as part of the crew – just how I like it as a passionate role-player.

There are even sentences like: “Beauty? That’s a floating piece of crap!” when you just proudly built your first little ship. Well, still, someone has to be the captain of this piece of crap. Therefore, quickly – as the unwritten law requires – the pirate who referred to it as such is appointed their leader. Those who do not appreciate the skiff will learn the hard way.

A sentence that particularly stuck with me and perfectly reflects my experience is: “Finally a place where I can moisten my gills.” Because that’s exactly what Corsair Cove offers: a sense for the setting and what pirates represent in pop culture – freedom, rum, and a lot of maritime action.

The story is classic: You smash heads with the Spanish crown and sink each other’s ships one after the other. Battles take place either at sea between the ships in a turn-based combination of dice and cards (giving me a bit of tavern gambling vibes) or in real-time in front of your self-built Tortuga with cannon towers and more.

A special twist is that you can utilize the space available to you completely. Thus, when building, you can connect islands and even build vertically on cliff faces. You take what you can get and give nothing back. Another highlight is also the small, animated pirates who bring your own Tortuga to life and brawl, drink, and chip in where work is needed.

The entire presentation and gameplay loop drew me in faster than I could say Klabautermann, and before I knew it, I had sunk 10 hours according to Steam and can hardly wait to play the full version and set sail for likely the next 100 hours.

If you want to enjoy the demo yourself, you can do so starting May 28, 2026, on Steam. Corsair Cove is planned to release in 2026 for PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the Microsoft Store. It should also be available on the first day in the PC Game Pass.

Windrose is another pirate candidate that has captivated many privateers. However, MeinMMO author Ody couldn’t quite get into it, even though he saw a lot of potential in the game: I wanted to feel like a pirate, but a new survival game on Steam turned me into a stranded Tom Hanks
