Introducing children to a hobby like Dungeons & Dragons is the dream of many fans, but it’s not that easy. A Dungeon Master has just achieved this – in a seemingly funny oneshot that turned out to be surprisingly emotional.
So you don’t immediately call the youth welfare office: The whole thing sounds worse than it really is, and there is a happy ending. Moreover, if we can believe the comments on Reddit, the daughter isn’t the only one who had tears in her eyes during the story.
About the story: A father wanted to play D&D with his wife and eight-year-old daughter. For their adventure, they chose the oneshot “The Wild Sheep Chase” (available for free at Winghorn Press in English), an adventure for characters at level 4-5 and suitable for children. I’ll try to spoil the plot as little as possible.
The daughter chose a Wild Magic Sorcerer, a class known for absolute chaos for her first character – what exactly her reasoning was is not revealed. However, tears were shed during the adventure:
- For the first time, when the daughter defeated a monkey with a spell that turned out to be a cursed human. Quoting Reddit: “I didn’t want to roll so well!”
- For the second time out of relief when Mom intervened to bring the accidentally killed person back to life with Revivify – something the daughter didn’t know her mother could do.
- For the third time, when the duo managed to convince the adventure’s antagonist not to be evil anymore, achieving a good ending for everyone.
“Had to stare at my dice for a second to collect myself”
For the DM, it was the best adventure he ever led, as he himself says:
Eight years old. Her instinct was to not kill the villain. But to save him. I had to stare at my dice for a second to collect myself.
No one died […] Perfect oneshot. I know these wholesome posts pop up here more often, but I get it now. Best game I have ever led.
The story also moves players in the community and brings some to tears (“Someone cast ‘Create Water’ in my eyes!”) and, as D&D players are, elicits dry comments like “What I hear is that I need more kids at the table to balance out the murderous adult players.”
