The French MMORPG company Ankama has fallen victim to a hacking attack, during which user data has been compromised. What could follow, we will explain to you.
What kind of company is this? Ankama is a company behind several titles. These include the MMORPGs Dofus, WAVEN, and Wakfu, as well as many other titles such as:
- Savara
- Maliki: Poison Of The Past
- KROSFIGHTER
- KROSMAGA
- One More Gate
- Super Nano Blaster
- Drag’n’Boom
- DOFUS TOUCH
- ABRACA
- KROSMASTER ARENA
- Nindash
- TACTILE WARS
- ISLANDS OF WAKFU
- KING TONGUE
- FLY’N
If you have played any of their titles, you could be affected by the attack and your data may be at risk.
Hackers steal a lot of data
What have the hackers obtained? Ankama informed its users about the hacking attack via email. They explain that the attackers gained access to sensitive user data (Source: mmorpg.org.pl). They gained access to the following data:
- First and last names
- Email addresses
- Cities
- IP addresses
- Order history (what you purchased, when and at what price)
- Partial payment details (the first 6 and last 4 digits of the payment card, without CVV).
According to the information, passwords themselves were not affected, yet the attackers now have some opportunities to profit from that.
What should you watch out for? The leaked data is a gift for phishing attacks. Hackers can conduct deceptively real emails and even phone calls, where the attackers pose as bank employees.
They can exploit the trust of the victims by knowing their names, city, and even account details such as the compromised card numbers and debits for one of the games. Anyone who has an account there should pay particular attention to unusual emails and calls in the future.
Emails pretending to be about a supposed account suspension, a supposed issue with the bank account, or a supposed confirmation of a payment staged by hackers could arise. These can even appear with the correct sender’s email or in the same chat as the usual emails or even SMS.
Detailed tips on protecting your account can be found from the Consumer Advice Center.
Even though Ankama does not manage AAA MMORPGs, many users can become victims of targeted phishing attacks over the years due to the hack. There are also repeated hackers in games: Hackers disrupt popular MMORPG from Germany, the developer says: “Funny how this always happens after a ban wave”
