What happens next with Guild Wars 2? This is what happens now that the sequel has been announced

MMO fans could take notice at the Summer Game Fest 2026, as ArenaNet announced the continuation of their MMORPG series with Guild Wars 3. But what will happen to Guild Wars Reforged and Guild Wars 2? This question was answered in a new video.

Just one day after the Summer Game Fest and the announcement that Guild Wars 3 will start with a beta in fall 2027, ArenaNet released a new YouTube video, in which they talk about the future of the Guild Wars series.

First, studio head Colin Johanson (seen in the title image) assures that despite the development of Guild Wars 3, there will also be continued support for Guild Wars Reforged and Guild Wars 2. In doing so, he directly announces how both games will continue.

What’s next for Guild Wars Reforged? After Johanson assures fans that they plan to support both predecessors for many years despite the new title, he lets developers behind the titles speak.

First, Stephen Clarke-Willson, Game Director behind Guild Wars Reforged, talks about the remaster of the first part, which was released in December 2025. According to him, half of the Steam players played the MMORPG on the Steam Deck in the first month. Building on that, they are currently working on a version for Mobile. The servers of the mobile version will be part of the PC version, and PC players will be able to access the game on Mobile at no additional cost.

Additionally, they announce that they are working on a completely new type of content after two of their new dungeons were successful.

4 new initiatives, but no new expansions for Guild Wars 2 for now

What’s next for Guild Wars 2? Regarding Guild Wars 2, Game Director Josh Davis speaks. For the future of Guild Wars 2, they are working on 4 major initiatives, including a new Hollow system to connect Guild Wars 2 with the upcoming Guild Wars 3. This will allow players’ achievements to be transferred.

They also want to tackle Guild Wars 2 itself. Davis explains that they aim to modernize the MMORPG, specifically the old content will be adapted to modern design standards. For this, they intend to incorporate community feedback and also improve the workflow of development.

After over a decade, they are working on a new Borderlands map as the 3rd initiative. This will be used for the World vs. World mode where 3 servers fight in a large siege.

However, the most exciting announcement is probably a new open-world map in Orr, which is intended to be a first taste for the world of Guild Wars 3.

For those who were hoping for new expansions, disappointment awaits. In September, the current expansion, Visions of Eternity, ends. Due to the 4 previously mentioned initiatives, ArenaNet will not focus on new expansions for now. After the release of Guild Wars 3, however, they plan to resume work on major content updates.
