Rockstar Games was hacked and the leaked data shows how much money the developer studio earns every day from GTA Online.
What kind of hacker attack is this? The hacking group “ShinyHunters” claimed over the weekend to have hacked the GTA developer “Rockstar Games”. The attackers threatened to publish stolen financial documents, contracts with partners, and marketing plans if Rockstar Games did not pay a demanded sum of money.
The attack was shortly thereafter confirmed by Rockstar Games. As a spokesperson for the developer studio stated, for example, to Kotaku, the attackers had accessed “a limited amount of non-essential business data”. However, this does not have any impact on the company or the players.
The attackers allegedly used a service provider for cloud cost management and analytics called “Anodot” to gain access to the cloud-based data platform “Snowflake” and extract data from Rockstar Games (Source: thesybersecguru).
Leak shows: GTA Online generates a fortune for Rockstar Games every day
This is why Rockstar Games is not in a hurry with GTA 6: On April 14, ShinyHunters followed through on the threat and released some data from Rockstar Games. The first findings from the published documents are already circulating, including financial data on Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption, as shown in a post on resetera.
According to the published data, GTA Online generates an average revenue of 1,319,322 USD every day. This corresponds to approximately 1.12 million euros at the current exchange rate. The weekly average is reported to be 9,592,109 USD (approx. 8.14 million euros). In addition, the studio earns about 507,193 USD per week from Red Dead Online.
GTA Online is said to have an average of 9.94 million users across platforms every week, with the PS5 having the largest platform at 3.47 million active users, followed by the PS4 with 1.89 million. The PC is the weakest platform with only 894,621 weekly users.
Is that enough for GTA 6? The development of GTA 6 is said to have cost more than 1.9 billion euros. Given the daily revenues from GTA Online and RDO Online, Rockstar Games could presumably afford this without financial worries, if the leak’s data proves to be accurate.
Microtransactions and subscription models are a windfall for Rockstar
The leak reveals this as well: The published financial data also indicates that almost 74% of the weekly revenue is generated by Shark Cards. The remaining 26% is said to come from the subscription service “GTA +”.
Shark Cards are a type of microtransaction that allows players to purchase in-game currency for real money. The most expensive Shark Card, “Megalodon”, costs 74.99 € and gives players 10,000,000 GTA dollars.
Germany is said to be the third strongest country in spending rankings with around 15 million USD, about 10 million behind the UK in second place. The US unchallenged ranks first with over 153 million USD. To ensure you don’t have to buy Shark Cards, we show you the best ways to make money in GTA Online.
