The employees of Rockstar Games are planning to form a union. However, if this is not recognized voluntarily by Rockstar Games, it could lead to a strike around the launch of GTA 6 occurring.
What are the employees planning? The employees aim to establish a union and official collective bargaining. The goal is to achieve better working conditions, more fairness, additional protection rights, and a greater say in the workplace.
Why is this happening? In autumn 2025, around 30 employees of the studio were laid off. Rockstar Games itself justified this with “gross misconduct of the employees,” which allegedly corresponds to the disclosure of confidential information about GTA 6.
However, the employees themselves believed at the time that the layoffs were due to their intention to join a union. The subsequent dismissals are said to be the catalyst for the current renewed union formation.
Employees threaten to strike, what does this mean for GTA 6?
What could the consequences be? The employees are urging Rockstar Games to voluntarily recognize the workforce. They have set a deadline of November 19, 2026, which is the release date of GTA 6. If management refuses recognition, the workforce threatens further actions that could end in a strike.
Is GTA 6 in danger? Since the deadline for recognition is the release date of GTA 6, the release date is most likely not in jeopardy. The gold status is usually achieved several weeks before the official release date. Additionally, the game data has long been stored in the shop on consoles, allowing for timely unlocking for buyers.
However, what could be at risk if the strike starts directly on November 19 is the day-one support and bug fixes. If glitches or performance issues arise, the necessary developers might be absent to address them.
Thus, the employees would leverage that a catastrophic launch weekend could be looming. They would have a strong bargaining chip. But perhaps it won’t come to that if Rockstar recognizes the union.
During the previous layoffs, the dismissed employees protested in front of the headquarters and thus caused a stir. Flares were even lit and slogans were shouted: Former employees of Rockstar take to the streets because they feel unfairly treated: “Rockstar, you are disgusting”
