Steam co-founder Gabe Newell is known for living and working on a boat. Now that apparently isn’t enough, and he has invested in a nearly 71 million dollar villa.
What kind of villa is this? According to the Wall Street Journal, Gabe Newell has purchased a beachfront villa in Manalapan, Florida. The magazine’s sources say the house was sold to the Steam co-founder for 70.8 million dollars.
The villa spans about 1,858 square meters, includes a pool, a private dock for boats and yachts, a boat lift, and a tunnel that leads directly to the sea. The property was sold by Cindy and Ron McMacking. They purchased the land and all buildings in 2020 for about 39 million dollars. Originally, they planned to sell it for 85 million dollars.
This means Newell now has the perfect beachfront villa to go with his 77-meter yacht, which he acquired in 2025.
Three yachts, a boat company, and now the villa
What’s the deal with the yacht? Gabe Newell claims he has been living on a boat
for some time now and working from there. He says that he is actually retired. His daily routine consists of swimming, going to the gym, and hanging out on the boat. He does his work from his bedroom on the aforementioned vessel.
In November 2025, it was also revealed that Gabe Newell bought a new superyacht for 430 million euros. The boat, named Leviathan
, was commissioned from the company he previously purchased, Oceanco. This yacht allegedly features a complete hospital, satellites, garages for smaller boats and submarines, as well as entertainment systems and air conditioning. Furthermore, the ship includes two gyms and a 250-square-meter beach club with a spa and bar.
In addition to the Leviathan, Gabe Newell also owns the ships Draak and Rocinante. With the new villa offering direct beach access and the boat lift, Newell complements his collection of properties fittingly to his very nautical lifestyle.
The money for all these purchases likely comes from Newell’s earnings via Steam. Steam expert and indie advisor Chris Zukowski recently discussed the relationship between Steam and game developers: Steam expert begs developers: “Gabe Newell can’t buy yachts with wishlists”
