Former head of Anthem wants to try again, creates quasi-sequel to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

Casey Hudson has made a name for himself as a developer of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect. He is now presenting his new project at the Game Awards 2025.

What is known about the game? Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic will be a single-player action RPG with a strong focus on story. The game is being developed at Arcanaut Studios in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. The developers describe the project as a “spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.”

At the Game Awards 2025, there was a first teaser trailer that you can watch below. It features a Jedi who lands on a planet with her two companions (including the obligatory Android) to investigate a crashed ship. There, she finds something that justifies the use of a lightsaber. After Anthem and studio bankruptcy, a new Star Wars

Who is behind the game? The creative lead is Casey Hudson, whom many of you may know. As the lead developer, he has worked on RPG milestones such as Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy.

In recent years, however, Hudson has not had the best luck. After Mass Effect 3, he was the leading mind behind Anthem, which ultimately became BioWare’s biggest flop to date. According to his successor Mark Darrah, Hudson had a significant part in that.

After Anthem, the former BioWare veteran founded the studio Humanoid Origin to develop a sort of indirect successor to Mass Effect. In November 2024, we reported that it wouldn’t work out, the studio went bankrupt. With Lucasfilm Games on board, that shouldn’t happen with the new project.

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is still in a very early stage of development. Therefore, the release is likely several years away.
