With the release of the PS5, many users are hoping for an upgrade for PS Plus. The reasons for this are clear: There has been regular criticism of the “PS Plus” offer in recent months, and the switch from Xbox Live Gold has fueled these desires. Some fans say that something must change. We present the thoughts and ideas from the community.
Where does the new discussion about PS Plus come from? The competitor Microsoft removed the 12-month subscription for Xbox Live from its Xbox Store (via Trueachievements.com). Many suspect that the Redmond software giant wants to steer people towards signing up for Game Pass Ultimate, which consolidates all subscriptions and online services under one pass.
Some, like journalist Jeff Grubb (via purexbox.com), even believe that this could lead to Xbox multiplayer being free in the long run.
Now some fans say that Sony should also take a look at its subscription services PS Plus and PS Now. Because when the PS5 and Xbox Series X launch, Microsoft could potentially offer the better subscription system in the long term. In the past, PS Plus has often received criticism.
How did PS Plus perform in the past? In recent months, PS Plus has faced multiple criticisms:
- In PS Plus in May, there were two simulations available for free, but many fans were not satisfied with the games.
- After a few strong shooters in June, there was again criticism of PS Plus in July: Some complained about the games themselves, others about the timing. Because PlayStation Plus celebrated its 10th anniversary.
What fans demand from PS Plus
On reddit, users are currently discussing PS Plus, PlayStation Now, and Microsoft’s Game Pass Ultimate.
What fans demand from PS Plus: Fans have various wishes and ideas about how PlayStation Plus could change:
- Some users desire a different subscription model for PS Plus. User kawag writes: “They could offer an enhanced version of the monthly games from PS+. Instead of everyone having to go and add them (and possibly missing them), the pool just grows and gives access to all games, regardless of when they subscribed (but only if they are subscribed). The economics of something like a Game Pass could still work for Sony (though probably not for day-one access). While they may lose some sales, they would gain subscription fees.”
- User Jaycoht shares a similar opinion, stating that he prefers to have a library of games from which he can choose. From this library, he could select games at any time, even during months when he is not particularly interested in certain genres.
- And Boss_654 is even confident that Sony will change its subscription services. He writes: “Sony is not blind to all of this. They will merge PS Now and PS Plus into one subscription and possibly add some other bonuses (how cool would it be if they included something like a free Sony Pictures movie that would be streamed every month?). The only thing that remains to be decided is the price of the new subscription. But one thing Sony will not do is give away their games for free on day one.”
- Others say they would be satisfied if Sony would include more strong titles in PlayStation Plus more often. Then the subscription would be worth it in the long run, and a weak month like May 2020 with the simulations would not sting as much.

What arguments are there against the demands? Comparing Xbox Game Pass Ultimate with PlayStation Plus or PlayStation Now, many users say: Sony simply has the stronger AAA titles. And Sony will not just give away these games so easily. Some even see this as a threat to strong titles. As criticized by BrBronco:
If Sony were ever forced to release games on this type of service on day one, say goodbye to every AAA single-player game from Sony. It is not a coincidence that many MS games are either low-budget, multiplayer-oriented, or “games as a service” (which look like free-to-play games).
reddit user BrBronco.
Another point that some fans mention is the price: Many say that PS Plus only costs $60 a year – however, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate costs $180 a year. For around $60, PlayStation Plus with two monthly games is a fair offer.
There are also people who say: You get nothing if Sony offers strong AAA titles in PlayStation Plus or PlayStation Now, because you probably already own these games. Because PlayStation Plus would be worthwhile precisely because less-known titles are also included, like the game “Erica” in June 2020.
What rumors were there about PS Plus? There were also rumors about PS Plus Premium for a while. This was supposed to offer additional cloud storage, early access to games, and private servers. Our colleagues from GamePro strongly doubted PS Plus Premium.
