FIFA 20 with Early Access – Is the expensive Ultimate Edition worth 100 euros?

The release of FIFA 20 is coming towards us with ever bigger steps. We have taken a look at the Ultimate Edition. For whom is the expensive extra version worth it?

This is how you play FIFA 20 first: If you can’t wait any longer and want to secure an advantage over other Ultimate Team players, you want to start FIFA 20 as early as possible.

Firstly, this is possible with EA Access: The paid membership gives you the opportunity to try FIFA 20 eight days before release. The catch: The total playtime before release is limited to ten hours.

This edition allows you to play the full version before the official release: If you want unrestricted early access to FIFA 20, you can pre-order either the FIFA 20 Champions Edition or the FIFA 20 Ultimate Edition. Both are a bit more expensive than the standard version but allow for an earlier start to the season. You can start with the special editions on September 24.

But is the high price really worth it? We have taken a closer look at the most expensive version, the Ultimate Edition.

The FIFA 20 Ultimate Edition for PS4, Xbox One, and PC at a glance

• Price: €99.99 (PS4, Xbox One), €89.99 (PC)
• Nintendo Switch: On the Switch, you get no bonuses at all. Only a so-called Legacy Edition of FIFA 20 is released on the Nintendo console. This is essentially just a squad update without new modes compared to FIFA 19.
• Pre-order: You can only get the Ultimate Edition digitally – and thus only in the respective stores for Xbox One, PS4 and PC. Pre-ordering is possible until August 5.

Contents of the Ultimate Edition:

• The game “FIFA 20”
• An Icon loan player selection, with which you could choose one of 5 Mid-Icon items (for five matches)
• Special jerseys for Ultimate Team
• 24 Gold Packs (2 packs per week for 12 weeks)
• An untradeable Ones-to-Watch or Spotlight Player item
• Early access: With the Ultimate Edition, you can play starting from September 24.

What advantages does the FIFA 20 Ultimate Edition bring me?

The Ultimate Edition costs you a proud €30 more than the standard version. In terms of gameplay, the versions do not differ. What advantages does it bring? And for whom is this markup really worth it – also in comparison to the Champions Edition?

This is the main argument for the special versions

This is what players want most: The best argument is the early access that you get through the Ultimate Edition. You can start three days earlier than everyone else and start building your Ultimate Team while other players are still waiting for the release. 

However, the Champions Edition also allows you the early start. And it is already ten euros cheaper than the Ultimate Edition. So further arguments are needed for the most expensive version to convince. Does EA provide them?

These bonuses are available in FUT

Both special versions can do: In Ultimate Team, you get a loan Icon player and special jerseys if you pre-order the Ultimate Edition. Given that you can only use the icon for five matches and jerseys have little impact on the game, these bonuses are rather negligible.

Especially since the Champions Edition keeps up here. The jerseys are even available in the standard pre-order version. The unique feature of the Ultimate Edition are the packs and the Ones-to-Watch player.

You only get this in the Ultimate Edition: With the Ultimate Edition, you get instead of 12 rare Gold Packs a total of 24 rare Gold Packs. For 12 weeks, you can open two extra packs each week. This can be worthwhile if you are planning to buy packs with FIFA Points anyway.

However, as always with pack openings, luck determines the contents. In the best case, you can pull an absolute top player. But with a lot of bad luck, you may end up pulling nothing useful from the extra packs. Furthermore, the packs are not given all at once – so they do not give you a time advantage.

There is still the Ones-to-Watch player. The OTW players are characterized by increasing ratings the more they receive a TOTW card. Does that justify the Ultimate Edition?

This is what OTW players can do: Here, too, luck reigns. It is currently unknown which OTW item you will get. So it is to be assumed that it is a pure random item. And whether the player you then get actually increases in rating during the season depends on their real-life performances. So you might end up with a worst-case scenario of receiving a 79-rated goalkeeper who remains a 79-rated goalkeeper. 

In the best case, you hit a player who gets better and better over the season and develops into an endgame card in the 90s range. But: You need to ensure that they fit into your team. Because you cannot sell the player.

Should I buy the Ultimate Edition or not?

Get the Ultimate Edition if you…

• Absolutely want to start on 09/24.
• Plan to invest real money in FIFA Points in packs anyway.
• Will play FIFA 20 extremely intensively and want every advantage the game can offer you – in the form of extra packs and the OTW player. But note that you will not receive all the packs at once.
• Are willing to spend €30 more for these advantages.

Prefer to get the Champions Edition if you…

• Only want an earlier start on 09/24.
• Have no interest in extra packs.
• Really want the Icon card and the jerseys.
• Do not want an exclusively digital version of the game.
