Are you still hoping for a game where you can feel like Boba Fett or Mando from Star Wars? A sci-fi game on Steam promises just that. It is being developed by a single person, a family man.
Which game is being talked about? The game is called Riftwalker and is set to be a story-driven sci-fi action RPG. It is being developed by Ethan McKinnon, who, according to his LinkedIn profile brings more than 25 years of experience in game development.
McKinnon is the sole developer of Riftwalker. At the time this article is published, he also does not have a publisher. So the family man is taking on the work and financing of the project himself, as he reveals in a post on X.
Star Wars meets Dune, meets… Max Payne?
What is the game about? Riftwalker makes you a bounty hunter who hunts targets with guns, a jetpack, and a floating sci-fi motorcycle. This strongly resembles two of the most famous bounty hunters from Star Wars like Boba Fett and Din Djarin, better known as the Mandalorian
or simply Mando
.
With your bounty hunter, you will travel across seven different worlds, one of which the developer is already showcasing in the game trailers. With its dry desert landscape, it resembles the planet Tatooine from Star Wars, but also the desert world Arrakis from Dune.
McKinnon describes Riftwalker as a mix of The Mandalorian, Dune, and Max Payne – the latter is primarily meant to deliver inspiration for the combat and the dark background story. As in the game trilogy from Remedy Entertainment and Rockstar Games, there will also be bullet-time action in Riftwalker.
Augmentations and dark powers included
Where is the RPG element? This mix of Star Wars, Dune, and Max Payne is paired in Riftwalker with RPG mechanics. You will be able to enhance your bounty hunter with cybernetic modules and even equip them with permanent augmentations that change your gameplay.
Throughout the game, you will also draw new powers from the Void
. These, however, are said to cost you a part of your humanity. What exactly this means is not quite clear yet. It sounds like the Void will play a larger role.
