A father asked for advice five years ago for his son who wanted to become a filmmaker. Now he has succeeded, and incredibly successful.
About five years ago, a post appeared in the Facebook group Telltale Games Alumni from a man named Michael Parsons, who asked for advice for his fifteen-year-old son (via Eric Stirpe on Bluesky).
He wanted to become a film director and needed help. Parsons asked if anyone was knowledgeable about this and could give him tips – such as whether attending college would be worth it.
To that end, he posted a link to a YouTube channel, where his son would upload videos; he had taught himself all the skills in visual effects, animation, and editing.
Those who followed the link back then soon witnessed a horror phenomenon that thrilled millions of viewers and is currently making waves at the box office.
From YouTube to Theater
What did the 15-year-old do on YouTube? On the Kane Pixels channel, the teenager, whose real name is Kane Parsons, published short films. They dealt with the Creepypasta of the Backrooms.
The videos spread quickly and reached millions of views. Even outside the channel, the topic of Backrooms grew further, and even games were created about it. It was only a matter of time before Hollywood took notice of the phenomenon and reached out to Kane Parsons.
Now, a few years later, the film Backrooms is in theaters and incredibly successful. With a budget of around 10 million US dollars, it has grossed over 216 million US dollars worldwide (via boxofficemojo.com). This amounts to about 186 million €.
This is more than remarkable for a horror film from a director who is only 20 years old. The success of Backrooms is particularly impressive when considering the competition.
At times, the horror film was number 1 on the US box office charts, even surpassing giants like Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, which had to settle for third place (via thenumbers.com).
In second place, another horror film was ringing cash registers: Obsession, also by a relatively young director, and a film that scared even MeinMMO editor Niko.
But back to the father: One can imagine how proud Michael Parsons is given his son’s accomplishments. He returned once again to the Facebook group from back then and proudly posted a picture under his old post.
The picture shows a post from the studio A24, which produced Backrooms, announcing: Backrooms is number 1 worldwide.
