Diablo 3 Shepherd’s Staff: Farming, Recipe and Materials

What is this thing? The Shepherd’s Staff is usually used to open the rainbow level. There you can unlock a portrait frame, among other things.

Since Season 28 of Diablo 3, you need the Shepherd’s Staff for the Altar of Rites. In this short guide we will show you how to obtain it.

How to unlock the Shepherd’s Staff

What you need to do: To obtain the Shepherd’s Staff, you need to meet a few requirements. We will show you the individual steps in writing here in the guide, and below in a photo gallery. This way you can be sure you are searching in the right location.

1. Get yourself a Black Mushroom. You can find it in Act 1 in the Cathedral (Level 1). Look for a room that is located as an inner corner between two corridors. The black mushroom will be clearly visible growing on the floor. Keep in mind that the mushroom is quite rare, and you may need to create several new games for it.
2. Now you need Leoric’s Shinbone. You can find it in Leoric’s Manor (Courtyard of Leoric’s Manor). Enter the manor, and already in the first corridor there are two rooms. Look for a fireplace (ours only spawned in the right room). If you find wood you can interact with, the shinbone will spawn there.
3. Next, let’s buy Wirt’s Bell. Travel to Act 1 to the Hidden Camp. There you will meet the merchant Krümelchen, who sells you Wirt’s Bell for 100,000 gold under “Miscellaneous”.
4. Then we grab the Rainbow Water. For this, you need to use the way point for the Dahlgur Oasis in Act 2. Here you need to hope to find a merchant who can spawn at the southern end of the map, who will be attacked by enemies. If you help him, he will open a dungeon next to him (this works easiest if you have the bounty for this mysterious cave in Act 2). In the cave, you may find a mysterious chest where you can loot the Rainbow Water.
5. The last item is the Babbling Gemstone. Travel to Act 3 to the Korsikk Bridge. The item can drop in the Frost Caves. Either the Frost Caves or the Iceblight Caves can spawn on the map. If you see the Iceblight Caves, you can reset the game. The NPC Chiltara, found on Level 2 in the Frost Caves, can drop the Babbling Gemstone. But the chances are not particularly high.
6. Now let’s get the recipe Plan: Shepherd’s Staff. You can find it in Act 4 at the Silver Tower. There you must defeat Izual, and he will drop the recipe for the Shepherd’s Staff if you’re lucky.
7. Once you have everything, take the recipe to the blacksmith and teach him about it. Then you can craft the staff with the materials you have found.

Keep in mind that you will likely have to grind a lot for the materials. Many of the spawns are very rare and require several runs to appear. Expect to invest a lot of time here.

With the crafted Shepherd’s Staff, you can now open the portal to the secret level. There are some cool cosmetic items like a hamburger for you.
