In ARC Raiders you have the choice to either engage in PvP against other players or to pursue your own peaceful activities in PvE. The developers have now revealed how the distribution looks and are surprised by the results.
How many players play PvE? Developer Embark Studios revealed in an interview with The Guardian how the distribution between PvE and PvP players looks in ARC Raiders.
Namely, quite evenly: 30% of all players prefer PvE, 30% prefer to play against each other in PvP. The remaining 40% engage in both.
Executive Producer Aleksander Grøndal expresses surprise at the numbers. Contrary to initial assumptions, an unexpectedly large portion of players prefers the peaceful approach.
“It doesn’t always have to be about conflict”
What do the developers think about the numbers? Before the release of ARC Raiders, the developers did not expect that 30% of all players would prefer the peaceful version and would rather loot and level up in peace.
After all, the extraction shooter genre is known to be ruthless and unforgiving, often thriving on intense PvP skirmishes.
Not so in ARC Raiders: Every fifth player has reportedly never killed another, and according to Embark Studios, half of all users have less than ten human opponents on their conscience.
In contrast, the developers observe cooperative play and solidarity among players:
We have always wanted it to be this way, but it was somewhat surprising to see how many people have jumped on this aspect of the game… It has truly revolutionized the extraction shooter genre, as it doesn’t always have to be about conflict with other players.
Aleksander Grøndal
Many players join forces to defeat the sometimes very dangerous ARCs and find the best loot. This leads to exciting social interactions.
According to Embark Studios, 95% of all players would also use chat to communicate. When strong opponents like the Matriarch appear, interesting behavior among players is also observed:
In a moment – literally in less than 30 seconds – everyone on this server stopped shooting at each other and united to face the greater challenge together. And I didn’t really expect everyone to cooperate so willingly within 30 seconds.
Aleksander Grøndal
The Executive Producer of the title cites the look and atmosphere in the game as reasons for the peaceful collaboration within the community. The world would flourish, and the animals would return. They want to give players hope. Other players, however, are already seeking conflict: Players in ARC Raiders have so little to do that they are now hunting Twitch streamers.
