Bungie has revealed the first details about the upcoming Season of Dawn. Now we know how the story of Destiny 2 continues in Season 9. Osiris, an old acquaintance, comes into focus and the Guardians must save the greatest Titan who ever lived from death – even though he is already dead.
This is how Season 8 ends: Some fans had still hoped that the ending Season 8 would have a proper finale in its last week. But it seems that will not happen. Currently, everything indicates that the Season of the Undying will end rather unspectacularly.
For after the disappointing finale attack of the Vex Offensive, there have been no new developments in the last days of Season 8 – not even a new line of text or dialogue from an NPC that hints at the outcome of our fight against the Immortal Spirit, the greatest threat from Season 8.
Instead, we have now learned in a new trailer for Season 9 in just a few sentences and quite casually: We have probably defeated this powerful Vex enemy and changed the story in the process.
But at least we now know how the story continues in the new Season 9. And it sounds quite promising so far – especially for lore fans.
What is the story about in Season 9?
What is the celebration for lore fans all about? The continuation of the story within the framework of Season 9 will likely delight many lore lovers – after all, two important lore characters from the Destiny universe come into focus:
- the Warlock Osiris
- and the Titan Saint-14 (in English “The 14th Holy One”, which has been incorrectly translated)
Both characters have a captivating, mystical backstory with a lot of potential. Some players hope for an exciting story for Season 9 with interesting backgrounds to the grand narrative surrounding Destiny – that would be a true celebration for all who are interested in lore and the big picture in Destiny.
As the plot is also apparently set on Mercury, many hope that the unloved location and the corresponding Infinite Forest will finally become worth more than just a few mandatory visits within the framework of the flashpoints or a strike.
One major wish has likely been fulfilled by the developers to the Guardians. It appears that soon we will finally be able to use the Sparrow on Mercury.
Who is Osiris? Osiris is an old Warlock and the mentor of Ikora Rey. Osiris was also once Vanguard Commander before he was exiled by the Speaker.
Many may already know him indirectly from the Trials, the “Trials of Osiris”. But many lore-interested Guardians may also have already heard of the Osiris cult that has formed around the Warlock.
Osiris only personally appeared in the first Destiny 2 DLC Curse of Osiris. However, this DLC is considered by many players to be the worst additional content for Destiny 2, so many are now hoping that Osiris will finally receive content worthy of him.
Who is Saint-14? Saint-14 is an Exo and one of the most famous Titans in the history of the Last City. He casually refers to himself as “the greatest Titan who ever lived”. He served as the first Titan Vanguard leader and was the right hand of the Speaker.
After Osiris was exiled and following his crusade against the Fallen, Saint-14 eventually disappeared during a mission on Mercury.
He was supposed to prevent Osiris from disturbing the Vex in the Infinite Forest. However, he got lost in the infinite branches of reality and fought against the Vex for centuries, until they managed to kill him and drain his light.
Since then, he has been resting in a tomb created by the Vex in his honor. But that will apparently change soon.
Some may also know Saint-14 through his exotic Titan helmet “Helmet of the 14th Holy One” as well as through the lore surrounding the shotgun Perfect Paradox.
What we know about the story of Season 9 – This is how it continues
This is the story of Season 9: Our victory over the Immortal Spirit has apparently disturbed time on the planet Mercury, which is the main location of the further story, splitting it into countless realities.
This results in a new threat. The Cabal, led by a council of Psion Flayers, wants to take advantage of this and manipulate time so that the Guardians’ victory against the Red Legion from the vanilla story of Destiny 2 can be undone.
They want to write a different ending to this painful defeat in the Red War, and we are to restore the messed-up timeline.
In this context, we must help Osiris, the powerful Warlock, to repair his Sundial (a device and also the new activity from Season 9) to travel through time.
This way, the Guardians are apparently not only supposed to stop the Cabal in their plans but also save a legendary hero – the Titan Saint-14. Because Osiris himself has not succeeded in doing so yet.
Whether this is a separate storyline or whether Saint-14 will play an important role when we thwart the Cabal’s plans is still unknown at this time.
By the way: Currently, it does not look like the open ending of the Shadowkeep story will be addressed in Season 9. The focus seems to be on the continuation of the storyline surrounding the Vex’s attack.
There may be more details about the story in the Season of Dawn this evening (December 4th, starting at 7:00 PM). We will update this quickly as soon as we have more information.
What do you think of the story and its central characters so far? Are you excited about the new story in Season 9? And how do you view the ending of Season 8?
