Destiny 1 & 2 offer many opportunities to engage. Whether PvE, PvP, or even a mix of both is possible. Although Bungie has been trying to sell its loot shooter as an MMO for a long time, a crucial feature is missing, and that is housing. Did you know that Bungie actually wanted to implement this?
What became known? The YouTuber Forcer69 expressed on x.com his surprise at why Bungie had not implemented a housing system for Destiny 2 – That would have been a goldmine for playtime, enjoyment, and investment in the game as well as monetization.
Following this, the former community manager Liana Ruppert provided some hints, including that the developers at Bungie wanted such a system, but it never came to fruition.
Housing for you and your clan? Warframe shows the way
What is Housing? For those who are unfamiliar with the term: Housing describes the ability to acquire a living space – that is, a house, an apartment, a spaceship, or similar – to design it according to one’s own taste.
Games like Final Fantasy or Warframe set the example. Although housing is often a side feature, large communities form within these games, where design options are shared and even rated. Many fans can lose themselves in this for hours and have fun.
Why did the project fail? Liana Ruppert confirmed that the developers had indeed thought about such a system, but it was then discarded. This is what she had to say:
Oh man, soooo many developers wanted that when I was there. It would have been so great, but a lot would have to change in the game and in the internal resources for the ROI to be high enough for it to be a useful addition. The dreaaaaam.

By ROI, she means the “Return of Interest” – Bungie did not see enough profit/value here to invest in such a system, which is why the idea was discarded. Liana also explains that determining the ROI in service games is even more complex than in normal AAA titles that are not maintained for as long.
Since service games already have a high cost factor to keep them alive, the decision on new features is even stricter than usual.
What would such a feature have looked like? Looking at Warframe, there are plenty of options for how Guardians could have utilized housing. Options could include the spaceship, houses in the Last City, as well as a clan hall, where Guardians can showcase new monuments, rooms for displayed trophies, and more thanks to collected resources.
As Destiny 2 is currently in a rather dark situation, we can only dream. What do you think of such a system? We would love to hear your opinion in the comments!
