Artificial intelligence is increasingly becoming part of our work routine. Companies are currently investing billions in this technology, and more and more tasks in the office can be completed digitally. Ironically, the generation that grew up with smartphones and the internet is now finding favor in much older tools: pen and paper.
What is the current trend in offices? Companies are currently investing large sums in artificial intelligence. The goal? Automate workflows, support communication, and take over tasks that employees previously had to spend a lot of time on themselves.
At the same time, office life has long been largely digital: employees sit in front of the screen, with constant ringing and blinking. However, a counter-trend is developing in parallel: a survey by the office supplier Quill, reported by Business Insider, shows that especially Gen Z and Millennials are increasingly returning to traditional methods, namely pen and paper.
According to this, younger employees take handwritten notes twice as often as Boomers. 56 percent of the surveyed Gen Z workers would even prefer to leave a message for a colleague on a Post-it rather than sending a direct message.
Gen Z has had enough of constant digital communication
But why does Gen Z prefer pen and paper? One reason for this is the increasing amount of digital communication in the work routine. About one third of the surveyed younger employees say that constant digital messaging triggers a desire to work more analogously.
The feeling of completing tasks also plays a role: 94 percent of the surveyed Gen Z and Millennial employees say that it is more satisfying to cross off a completed item on a handwritten to-do list than to click a digital box.
However, young employees are not trying to completely ban laptops and smartphones from the office. Instead, they want to combine digital and analog working methods.
