The campaigns of Call of Duty are filled with action, scripted scenes, and polished cinematics. The new CoD: Modern Warfare 2 is no exception. For some players, the campaign is even the main reason to check out the latest Call of Duty each year.
CoD MW2 tells a story about drug cartels, terrorism, and the iconic Taskforce 141 featuring beloved characters like Captain Price, Soap, Ghost, and Gaz. The missions themselves also brim with nostalgia and references to the earlier Modern Warfare games.

Modern Warfare 2: Campaign – The Story
The story is a continuation of Modern Warfare 2019. If you want to understand all the connections in the game, you need a playthrough of the old campaign. Because CoD MW2 takes place three years after the events of CoD MW 2019.
However, the old story is not really necessary to be able to experience the new one.
The trailer above for the story includes a line that describes the situation very well. A prisoner is being interrogated and says: ‘Terrorism is good for business. As long as you wage war on terror, you’re only half-heartedly fighting against drugs.’
Accordingly, the story is a wild mix of opaque motives – who works for whom and why? In any case, there is a need to thwart the plans of the villains.
The story takes place partly in Mexico. You pursue arms dealers who are colluding with a terrorist organization: Al-Qatala. The group was already the driving evil force in CoD MW 2019.
The Shadow Company is also involved and works with you, as well as General Shepherd – an old acquaintance from the earlier Modern Warfare games.

Story does not end with the campaign
Like Modern Warfare 2019, CoD MW2 continues the story in upcoming service content.
Back then, the coop mode “Spec-Ops” was another source for story snippets, and smaller story pieces came in through the live service from time to time. Even a connection to the “Black Ops” universe was established … and the CoD zombies.
CoD MW2 would also like to utilize its own game modes:
- The new PvE raids in Modern Warfare 2 (December 14)
- The DMZ mode in Warzone 2.0 (November 16)
- Spec-Ops mode (October 28)
There are also leaks that a DLC with new story content is planned. The rumor persists that there will be no new CoD for the first time in nearly two decades in 2023. However, a story DLC that continues the narrative is expected. This has not been confirmed yet.
