In her youth, MeinMMO editor Jasmin spent a lot of time in Metin 2. Normally, her bedtime is at 10:00 PM, but she stayed up late for the MMORPG for a specific reason. Anecdote time at the Grindfest Theme Week 2026.
Since childhood, I have been an early riser. Even on weekends, I sometimes woke up at 6:00 AM, but I went to bed earlier in the evenings. That hasn’t changed over the years. I am more productive in the morning and go to sleep a bit earlier in the evening.
My inner grandma sends me to bed by 11:00 PM at the latest during the week. On weekends, it rarely goes much later, as my body has simply gotten used to this decades-old rhythm.
Of course, I also make exceptions, like for New Year’s Eve or other events, but I’ve hardly experienced those all-night gaming sessions that many gamers talk about, as I always fell asleep beforehand.
This week, you can expect exciting articles every day about MMORPGs. Included: nostalgic retrospectives, exciting analyses from renowned industry veterans, previews of upcoming online role-playing games, and fun streams.
Here’s the program for MeinMMO’s big MMORPG Theme Week 2026
However, there is one single video game for which I regularly stayed up late in my youth. Especially on weekends or sometimes during the week, I spent several nights in the MMORPG Metin 2.
Those who have read older articles by me know, that I played the game excessively. Probably more than I actually should have. But there was a specific reason for that. Especially in Metin 2, it made more sense to play at night on many days.
Metin 2 Became a Quiet Chamber at Night
Depending on the level range, there are certain spots in Metin 2 where one could level up particularly well. This could be, for example, a specific chamber among 25 rooms in the spider dungeon, where there were simply the most monsters.
You had to stand with a warrior on a horse in a specific position and press the hit key. This way, you hit with your sword from left to right.
Then it was the task of the ranged fighters, like ninjas or shamans, to pull the mobs and move them into this hitting radius. Then the mobs would die as quickly as possible and could regenerate even faster. It was a very monotonous process, aimed at maximizing leveling.
On the server Mosha, where I played back then, there were only 6 channels. That means that the specific leveling spot suitable for my character only occurred 6 times in the entire game.
You can imagine how coveted these spots were. Often, you had to coordinate with others who could use the chamber out of goodwill until a certain time. Afterwards, either a change took place, or there was a fierce struggle for the coveted leveling spot.
Often, it was the right of the stronger, and you just had to assert yourself. I wasn’t interested in that stress back then and therefore shifted leveling to late evening to nighttime hours. At that time, the chance was higher that the leveling spots would not be occupied.
I also remember the nice conversations that took place during that monotonous leveling. To avoid falling asleep, we talked about all sorts of topics. But by 2:00 to 3:00 AM, my body couldn’t take it anymore, and I sometimes fell asleep on the keyboard.
I wouldn’t do something like that for any game in the world nowadays. I’m simply too tired beforehand. Moreover, I have noticed that my body struggles harder to start the workweek on Monday when I completely overdo it with the time on the weekend.
Therefore, I will probably remain an early bird forever and lock the night owl back in the cupboard of my youth.
In the last Grindfest, I analyzed in an article why Metin 2 is so successful in Germany. It is related, among other things, to the media coverage on television, but also to other reasons: The totally outdated Metin2 is still a successful MMORPG in 2026, especially in Germany – But why actually?
