Godzilla has been wandering the Earth for over 70 years, taking on various colors and forms. A special variant comes from an anime, which is a complicated sci-fi series that shows the King of Monsters in a particularly powerful light.
Which anime is it? In 2021, the anime Godzilla Singular Point was released on Netflix. The series is set in the year 2030, where the doctoral candidate Mei is investigating supposedly imaginary creatures, while the engineer Yun is examining a villa elsewhere. Both encounter a strange song. Suddenly, gigantic KaijÅ« (the Japanese term for giant monsters) appear, posing a threat that could destroy the entire universe – the two must act against it.
Singular Point tells a standalone story and does not rely on other variants of Godzilla, but it isn’t just about action; it’s a hard sci-fi series that turns Godzilla into a complex entity.
More than just a monster on Earth
Warning: The following section contains spoilers about Godzilla and what he is in Singular Point.
What makes this anime so complex? Instead of telling the classic story of humans fighting against the giant lizard, a more complicated approach is taken: there are physical concepts about space, time, and dimensions that escape human understanding.
Well-known monsters still appear, such as Rodan and also Anguirus, who gets to appear again. Godzilla, of course, cannot be absent, but here he is a more complex entity. The King of Monsters releases particles called Archetype
, which can change everything around them but are also likely linked to the existence of the Kaijū, as these particles can manipulate reality.
According to the novel adaptation (via Wikizilla), Godzilla and the other monsters are merely the physical manifestation of an entity existing outside our dimension, perceiving everything related to space and time simultaneously. Hence, Godzilla in the anime is virtually immortal. If he dies, he simply returns at some point. He appeared about 50 years before the events of the series and was defeated.
Godzilla also transforms into several forms. He starts as a water creature and resembles the classic Godzilla in his strongest form – which is reminiscent of the film Shin Godzilla.
To prevent the destruction of the entire universe, the protagonists must find scientific ways instead of relying solely on firepower.

Fun, even if you don’t understand much
What does MeinMMO editor and Godzilla fan Nikolas Hernes say about Singular Point? I will be honest with you, I didn’t understand a lot in the anime – maybe I should never have dropped physics. Those who watch Singular Point should brace themselves for a lot of technical and philosophical talk, but this nonsense is quite enjoyable because it somehow fits Godzilla.
Nonetheless, there is action and it’s fun, especially when a certain robot from Godzilla’s history appears again. The mystery surrounding a song also creates a thrilling atmosphere.
Moreover, the protagonists should be praised for feeling refreshing in the Godzilla context. It’s enjoyable to watch them geek out, even if you understand nothing.
While Singular Point can’t completely escape anime clichés, many viewers likely expect exactly that when watching an anime about Godzilla. Personally, I can recommend the anime, especially if you want to experience Godzilla from a different perspective.
