Here we continue with all references from the opening of Chainsmoker Cat from second 12 to 47. Did you recognize all of them?
With our table of contents, you can jump directly to the individual references:
2001 – Blue Spring
In this scene, two people are involved. Yani and a neighbor stand opposite each other in profile. They light each other’s cigarettes by pressing the glowing tips together. The reference comes from the Japanese youth drama Blue Spring, in which two rebellious students have the exact same pose.
A scene in which flowers are being watered also comes from the film. But in the opening, it was turned into heads of lettuce.
2004 – D.E.B.S.
The cat girl in the background smokes her cigarette and adjusts her cropped top. In the foreground, another cat girl is seen with her arms crossed. Two of the protagonists in their school uniform-like spy outfits can be seen in the action-comedy D.E.B.S. The figure in the background smokes in the exact same casual pose, while the figure in the foreground looks to the side.
2019 – Ready or Not
Yani sits, just like the protagonist Grace in the horror-comedy, bloodied on a staircase and smokes a cigarette.
1974 – Chinatown
In the original, actor Jack Nicholson is seen in his famous role as private detective J. J. Jake Gittes. He stands in the classic outfit with a fedora hat and suit in a dried-up canal in Los Angeles, surrounded by police officers and other officials. In the anime, Yani takes this position.
2000 – Malèna
In the original, Malèna is an incredible beauty. In this iconic scene, she sits at a table in a busy square and takes a cigarette into her mouth. Before she can do anything herself, countless men immediately rush in from the background and offer her a lighter. Yani does exactly that in the anime.
1985 – The Breakfast Club
Within a few seconds, two scenes from the film follow in quick succession. First, we see the character Allison Reynolds taking a liberated pose with her arms outstretched during the famous dance scene in the school library. In the background, a person is also seen climbing onto a statue. In the anime, it’s a character climbing up a roof instead.
In a second shot, the rebellious John Bender performs a dynamic move during the exuberant dance scene in the shoe library.
1984 – Footloose
In between, there are two short scenes from Footloose, but you only see a pair of feet dancing in each case. They come from the film’s intro. In the anime, pairs of feet are also shown, but with different shoes. We can’t imagine that dancing in Crocs-like shoes is particularly advantageous.
1987 – Dirty Dancing
Anyone who has seen Dirty Dancing can surely remember the iconic finale, where Johnny Castle strides determinedly in black clothing through the seated audience to bring Baby on stage for the final dance. In the anime, it is not Yani running toward the audience, but the bald landlord.
1979 – Tantei Monogatari
The main character from the Japanese cult crime series stands in front of an evening skyline, lighting a cigarette. He must shield his lighter with both hands. Yani does exactly that in the anime, wearing a blue work jacket and a cute white safety helmet.
2003 – Coffee and Cigarettes
In the image, there is a round table with the film’s characteristic checkerboard pattern. Coffee cups, an ashtray, and packets of sugar are arranged on it, and the acting person at the table takes a thoughtful pose. This is also seen in the anime. However, there is no checkerboard pattern here, but a pixel pattern with a cat face.
1986 – Stand by Me
This is not a real scene, but a revenge fantasy. A boy gets revenge on the nasty townspeople by drinking castor oil before the competition, provoking a gigantic vomiting reaction. Yani also goes through this.
1994 – Dumb and Dumber
Well, what can we say about this? Harry Dunne sits on the toilet after taking laxatives and is apparently experiencing the diarrhea of his life. He takes a cramping pose and screams from the effort. Yani goes through the same.
1996 – Trainspotting
Mark Renton disappears into Scotland’s worst toilet, and only his legs can be seen sticking out of the dirty bowl. Yani suffers the same fate and dives into the toilet.
Afterward, the character finds himself in a dream sequence, swimming through the ocean. Yani does this in the anime too – but as a white cat.
1995 – Kids
The four teenage actors lounge on the couch and consume drugs. They pass a stub through the rows. The anime does this too with four cat girls, with a thread of saliva forming on the joint.
2024 – Conclave
The thriller addresses the backgrounds of the papal election. The image shows three high-ranking Catholic clergy smoking. In the anime, they are replaced by cat girls.
1991 – Night on Earth
Taxi driver Corky sits with her cap turned backward at the wheel and pops a bubble of gum. Yani also enjoys her gum and closes her eyes at the wheel.
1983 – The Superfighter (Project A)
Yani falls backward off the roof of her apartment complex in this scene. A cat girl watches her free fall. In the original, one of the most dangerous stunts in film history is depicted. Jackie Chan throws himself from a tall clock tower and breaks through several fabric awnings.
The references listed here span from second 12 to second 47 inclusive. Here, there are numerous allusions that do not cease in the last section. So you don’t have to click back to page 1 to see the opening again, we have embedded it again on each page.
