Superman is among the forefront of DC’s heroes, but he is not invincible. His encounter with the giant lizard Godzilla ended in a defeat that even the great villain Doomsday would envy.
Superman is a very strong character who rarely lets himself be defeated. He battles powerful figures and beings in countless stories that make it challenging for him.
However, he had the short end against the iconic Godzilla. The Japanese giant lizard entered the DC world in the comic series “Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong” and caused great destruction.
When it reached Metropolis, Superman stood against the lizard. At first, he attempted to resolve the situation diplomatically, which failed. A fight ensued that initially seemed quite balanced.
Godzilla attacks with his heat ray, which Superman counters with his heat vision. However, an action from hero Shazam leads to a tragic turn of events.

Well intentioned, but…
What happened to Shazam? The character came to assist Superman in the fight against Godzilla. He used lightning and magic for this. Suddenly, he reverted back to his original form and became the harmless Billy Batson again.
Superman caught him in his fall, but saw that Godzilla was preparing his next attack. So the man of steel had to make a quick decision: protect Billy or counter Godzilla’s attack?
He chose the former. The heat ray struck Superman and injured him so severely that he was knocked out. His body was burned and not viable. He was taken to intensive care.
Superman had to recover from this attack while Godzilla continued to wreak destruction. Thus, the lizard accomplished what even great villains like Doomsday could not.
While Doomsday did kill Superman, for instance, in The Death of Superman, he also perished in the process. Godzilla, however, survived the encounter and was allowed to continue stomping through Metropolis.
How did the story end? For a certain period, Superman was as good as dead. However, he managed to recover towards the end of the comic series. He sought out Godzilla but did not want to fight him; instead, he wanted him as an ally.
Meanwhile, King Ghidorah, one of Godzilla’s greatest foes, had appeared. Together with the Justice League and new allies like King Kong, Superman confronted the threat.
Would Superman have defeated the giant lizard in a fair fight? That is speculation. However, it is certain that he must have learned a lot from the first encounter and would be better prepared for a rematch. King Kong and Godzilla also work together in other stories: Godzilla’s next opponent is confirmed, and he is so powerful that the giant lizard needs Kong’s help again
