Hardly any genre can craft such absurd stories as MMOs. Thanks to guilds and other social structures, there is plenty of room for quirky events. One of the most incredible stories took place in 2005 in the space MMO EVE Online.
As a PvP game, there is always a certain danger of being attacked in EVE Online. It can also happen that you permanently lose your beloved belongings, even expensive ships. The PvP in the game can be quite spectacular, as an event from 2005 shows.
Ubiqua Seraph was a large corporation at that time. Corporations are the equivalent of guilds in the game. As EVE Online reported on April 19, 2025, this particular corporation was the victim of a major theft that had begun months earlier and was accompanied by an assassination.
Like in a Hollywood Movie
How did the heist take place? A special corporation in the game was the Guiding Hand Social Club. Their focus was on mercenary and espionage contracts that outsiders could commission. The then-founder Istvaan Shogaatsu described the corporation as follows: offers … unconventional mercenary services. These include covert operations, terrorist attacks, and a wide range of atrocities that we are happy to offer on the market.
They were commissioned to kill Mirial, the then-CEO of Ubiqua Seraph. This was no easy task, which is why the mercenary Arenix Xemdal used a sneaky yet impressive strategy. He joined Ubiqua Seraph and worked his way up within the corporation over 10 months.
He managed to gain the trust of the corporation and CEO Mirial. One day, Arenix Xemdal got his chance. According to PCGamer, Mirial was flying her ship, a Navy Apocalypse, while Arenix Xemdal was flying an Imperial Apocalypse as her lieutenant.
An Assassination and Heist
How was Mirial dealt with? Her ship and escape pod were destroyed by Arenix Xemdal. After that, Arenix also retrieved Mirial’s corpse, as that was the demand of the unknown client. But the assassination was not all.
Together with Arenix, other members of the Guiding Hand Social Club also infiltrated Mirial’s corporation. Almost simultaneously with the assassination, the mercenary corporation attacked all offices of Ubiqua Seraph and stole ISK, the currency of the game, and many belongings of the guild, according to PCGamer.
According to EVE Online, the guild lost 25-40 billion ISK in the process. According to the article from PCGamer, that was about $16,500, or nearly €14,000, when adjusted for today.
Why the anonymous client commissioned the assassination remains unclear. The Hollywood-like heist took place just a few days after the formation of the Aegis Militia
alliance, in which Ubiqua Seraph was involved. Regarding the contract, the then-CEO of the Guiding Hand Social Club stated:
At the time of signing the contract, we demanded a billion ISK, which was a considerable sum many months ago. However, we could never have imagined what profits would arise from the execution… We suddenly stood before Fort Knox and held the key in our hand.

The compensation for the contract was also not the focus of the operation. According to Istvaan Shogaatsu, the contract takes precedence over everything: The financial compensation takes a backseat to the recognition we received for our efforts.
Today, the mercenary guild seems to be no longer active. According to a Reddit comment from six years ago, most members stopped because they got older and started their careers and families.
