A gamer has decided to part ways with his computer after nearly 20 years. After referring to it as a “legend,” he explains why he must say goodbye to his beloved PC. And this comes after almost 20 years.
Rusty and proprietary components for which there are hardly any replacements
What are the problems? On the one hand, the hardware, the user reports on reddit, is heavily rusted and therefore hardly usable. At the moment, the box is just sitting around his house without any meaningful use.
On the other hand, the computer system relies on proprietary hardware. Proprietary hardware refers to components specifically designed by the manufacturer for a particular device. However, this has the disadvantage that modifications or adjustments by the owner are significantly limited.
Because certain connectors or modules can only be found on the corresponding hardware. For example, you can only use certain power supplies or only specific hard drives or drive bays. This makes repairs or replacements quickly expensive.
The user explained himself: He considered replacing the motherboard with a new one or at least replacing his rusted model, but replacement parts are extremely difficult to find:
That’s half the reason [for scrapping], all that stuff is proprietary. Respect to the people who restore such things, but it would probably be like trying to rebuild a DeLorean. My father took a look at it and said: ‘You’ll never find a replacement for this board.’
Another user writes in the Reddit thread that he tried exactly the same thing, but Dell wanted 500 US dollars for a replacement part.
What model is it? According to various users, it is said to be the Dell XPS 700. This was a desktop PC from Dell, which sold the computer starting in 2006. The dimensions and weight are also impressive:

The high weight comes from the thick aluminum casing used in the housing. The user also mentions that the computer weighs about as much as his bed frame, which is why he doesn’t even want to keep it as a souvenir.
