A cyberpunk shooter at gamescom 2026 achieves what only Super Mario could do before

No Law gamescom Meinung angespielt

With No Law, developer Neon Giant ventures into a large cyberpunk world. MeinMMO editor Nikolas Hernes got a short demo of the game at gamescom 2026 and was hooked right away – because of a mustache.

What kind of game is No Law? After the developers of Neon Giant have already ventured into a cyberpunk world with the top-down action game The Ascent, they are raising the stakes with No Law.

No Law is set to be a large open-world shooter RPG that most closely resembles Cyberpunk 2077 by CD Projekt Red. A pretty mammoth comparison, but how does the game fare with the shown gameplay?

A symbolic mustache

At gamescom 2026, Tor Frick and Arcade Berg from developer Neon Giant showed me a demo of the game that was played in 2 different ways, once stealth and once as hardcore action.

But the main character Grey Harker greeted you right away, radiating the 80s energy you would probably expect from No Law with his mustache. And to be fair: Recently, only Super Mario’s mustache gave me such great anticipation for a release.

Looking at the description of No Law, one quickly compares the game to Cyberpunk 2077, but No Law is quite different. For one, the visual design of the world.

No Law has plants, a lot of plants, and this already created a different atmosphere in the hands-off demo – less grim and dirty than in Cyberpunk 2077. As a comparison, Creative Director Tor Frick simply said: “Judge Dread meets Studio Ghibli.”

That sounds pretty absurd, but somehow it perfectly captures the mood that is clearly conveyed in the short demo. In the world of No Law, there should be many crimes, but also people who just want to live their lives and enjoy.

To ensure this immersion, Neon Giant wants to focus on a lot of details. In stores, items are physically present and selectable, and you could zoom in quite close on the shampoo bottles and chip bags in the demo without losing details. For a small studio, which claims to consist of only 24 people, a big task, but that’s exactly how the studio seems to want it.

Just as important as the world and the immersion is the gameplay, and what was shown already awakened my inner Reacher or RoboCop.

Stealth is nice and all, but I want to be the action star

First, I was shown a stealth way for the mission to find an informant. To do this, you have to enter his apartment to find out his location. Secretly, you had the option to sneak past gangsters, either through a ventilation shaft or through a window, but you would need a lot of boxes for that.

You sneaked up to the apartment complex, talked to the owner, who you could pay for information, and made your way to the apartment. There, you dealt with two guys without killing them, and ultimately found out that you would need to search in the sewer.

Honestly: I’m allergic to stealth, so I liked the action variant more. You climbed up a hill over the gangsters, threw a stasis grenade, and took out the first enemies without any problems. With brute force, you got the general key from the owner, and even in the apartment, you fried an enemy with an electric weapon for so long that he probably won’t get up again. You could have used that just for stunning.

My biggest highlight is as simple as it is effective: The kick. Just watching it had a lot of impact, and I’m already looking forward to kicking enemies and doors with it in the full version.

Overall, the shown gameplay gave me a Reacher feeling. According to the developers, the missions will have many different approaches, and one of them will probably be the RoboCop one-man-tank variant.

This is also due to some gadgets that you will be able to use. In the trailer, there was already a grenade that suppresses sound. The developers explained to me that they wanted to implement gadgets that work for both stealth and action fans.

Exactly my thing

No Law could, if everything goes as the developers want, provide me with an even better cyberpunk experience than Cyberpunk 2077. Don’t get me wrong, I like the game from CD Projekt Red, but it was too big for me.

No Law aims to focus more on a smaller but packed world with various approaches and a high replay value – that’s exactly what I want.

The vs story was too big for me, too relevant for the overall context of the game world. I like the mustachioed revenge story in No Law better, conceptually. Smaller, more compact, but still somehow cozier.

I just want to be the Reacher powerhouse in a dystopian, but still green and not too dark cyberpunk world, kicking doors and fighting against baddies.

If the developers at Neon Giant manage to implement their big ambitions, No Law could become one of the next shooter highlights.

At gamescom 2026, there are countless games to check out. For MeinMMO editor Benedict Grothaus, one of the highlights is definitely a new Warhammer game: Total War: Warhammer 40,000 no longer feels like Total War and I love everything about it
