MeinMMO editor Alex wants to be able to do everything in MMOs. A class in Aion 2 offers him exactly that and even more, making it feel somewhat lacking in other MMORPGs.
In MMORPGs, I somehow want to do everything at once: I want to heal, but I also want to be able to fight impressively and well. But I also don’t want to fall over too easily. A few buffs for the group are somehow part of it too. Being able to influence status effects and enemies would also be nice.
Basically, the jack-of-all-trades of MMORPG classes. So far, there have been contenders, like some paladins, that offered something similar, but ultimately couldn’t convince me. Something always felt inconsistent or didn’t really work out.
Be it healing that was more of a nice gimmick than truly noticeable. Damage that was so poor that it became tedious in solo play. Or defense values that couldn’t withstand even a gentle breeze.
Then Aion 2 came around the corner and was supposed to provide me with exactly what I wanted with the Chanter. And it was supposed to deliver on its promise, and even a little more.
The jack-of-all-trades I’ve wished for
What makes the Chanter so special? The Chanter comes as a true all-rounder. He primarily fights in melee, but also offers some ranged attacks. Furthermore, he brings group healing abilities and can provide shields and damage reduction for himself and nearby group members. Additionally, he has abilities that can enhance himself and the group or influence enemies.
Additionally, he deals decent damage, especially for solo use and most casual content, and doesn’t just fall over when the boss sneezes at him. In emergencies, he can heal himself, and with the mix of melee and ranged attacks, he brings practical mobility. This allows for buffs, healing, and status effects to be woven in without having to sacrifice too much damage.
This is especially important in high-content situations, where it matters to bring down the opponent as quickly as possible while simultaneously supporting the group where needed.
Indeed, the Chanter reaches his limits here concerning damage and healing, as he masters both at a mediocre level compared to, for example, an assassin or cleric. However, if you skill cleverly and assemble a good group, it can be balanced and utilized very well. I have managed high-level endgame content as a sole healing class without an additional cleric.
Here you can watch the Chanter in action:
All in all, this makes the Chanter a wonderful support hybrid that can fulfill all roles as an all-rounder. Yes, you can also tank with him if you have a good group and play smart – although not exceptionally well.
He offers exactly what I’ve always wanted. And he even goes a step further, as he looks extremely cool – a point that shouldn’t be overlooked.
He comes with a kind of staff that is used like a combination of a scepter and a spear. The moveset is simply enjoyable and brings a sense of magic with the ranged attacks, which perfectly rounds off the all-rounder feeling for me. It feels like the Chanter can do everything, just “only” at an average level.
But as it is with typical jack-of-all-trades: Those who use it cleverly and apply it situationally unleash the true strength.
And this is exactly the gameplay feeling I was looking for and now love. The Chanter is so well-designed that I would now like to have him as a class in all MMORPGs. The mix is simply cohesive and provides me with exactly the freedom I wanted.
How about you? Have you tried the Chanter yet or do you prefer another class significantly more? Do you know other MMOs that have similar classes? Let us know in the comments!
Aion 2 continues to attract a large number of players and is very popular. However, MeinMMO author Nicole has learned to appreciate another MMORPG significantly more during her time in Atreia: Aion 2 has made me appreciate WoW more
