In a few weeks, Lord of Hatred, the second expansion for Diablo 4 will be released. It brings a new class and a new area along with a story. Blizzard has now released a cutscene that impressively shows how dangerous your major adversary in the addon will truly be.
Spoiler Warning: We are showing a cutscene from Lord of Hatred with important key information about the story and the characters you will encounter there. If you want to experience the story yourself, you should not continue reading.
In our article, you will find a spoiler-free overview of everything you need to know about Lord of Hatred.
Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred, plays a central role in Diablo 4 and appears several times directly or indirectly in the base game:
- His avatar, the bloody wolf with a skull head, accompanies you throughout the campaign.
- Lilith, Mephisto’s daughter and the mother of Sanctuary, is the antagonist of the base game.
- In Vessel of Hatred, Mephisto appears again but escapes – much to the annoyance of many players. However, he apparently takes possession of Neyrelle.
Without Mephisto, the entire story of Diablo would not have come to be. Now, in Lord of Hatred, he will be the main rival against whom you can face off, and according to Blizzard, there will be no more open endings this time.
IGN was exclusively allowed to release a cutscene that clearly showcases Mephisto’s power:
In the cutscene, Mephisto confuses the spirit of Lorath, who, as a Horadrim, should actually be immune to such tricks. He tries to warn Adreona, the queen of the Amazons, whose realm Skovos you will visit in Lord of Hatred.
However, Lorath draws his sword and kills Adreona, whom he believes to be that way because of Mephisto’s trickery. The Horadrim only sees this after Mephisto lifts his illusion. For the assembled crowd, it appears as though Lorath has slaughtered their queen before everyone’s eyes.
On YouTube and Reddit have some comments about how Lorath should not fall for such a thing. As a Horadrim, he should know better than to face the Lord of Hatred alone and without support, expecting to be believed.
The Paladin as a key role in Lord of Hatred
Mephisto himself disguises as Akarat, a legendary pilgrim who founded the entire religion of the Zakarum – thus the faith on which the power of the Paladins is based.
This makes two scenes in the video particularly exciting.
On a parapet, a Paladin can be seen observing the events from above and clearly seeing through Mephisto’s trick. This is not surprising, as in the introductory cinematic of the Paladin, he already faces Mephisto in his “new form”:
Akarat, aka Mephisto, continues to deceive the gathered people by bringing Adreona back to life after Lorath has cut her throat and she has died before everyone’s eyes.
Such deception maneuvers are actually more the domain of Belial, one of the four Lesser Evils of Hell. However, it is clear that the Lord of Hatred can also cloud the minds of humans with that very hatred. No wonder then, that he is the strongest among his brothers.
Lord of Hatred will be released on April 28 for PS5, Xbox, and PC (Steam and Battle.net). It includes the new area Skovos, numerous new features, and two classes: the Paladin – which you can already play by pre-ordering – and the Warlock. This one could become quite interesting for many players: German Diablo expert is sure: The Warlock will be the most complex class so far, but for casuals, there is an easy mode
