On Netflix, there are quite a few series for fans of video games. In 2025, an adaptation of a popular action game was released, which not only did well but also boosted the sales of the game franchise, despite it being quite old.
Which series is it about? On April 3, 2025, Netflix released Devil May Cry. The animated series targets an older audience and adapts the world of the eponymous action game series by Capcom, focusing on the main character Dante, who faces his family history while also having to stop demons.
The series was successful on Netflix. In the release week (March 31, 2025 to April 6, 2025), the series performed quite well. Devil May Cry ranked 4th in the Netflix charts, achieving 5.3 million views and 21,000,000 watched hours in just 4 days.
However, the success of the series also had a big impact on the game franchise.
The game franchise was revived, even though the last new installment was released in 2019
What happened to the Devil May Cry
series after the show? Capcom published a financial report for the first half of the fiscal year 2026, which is set to end on March 31, 2026. This refers to the period from April to September 2025. Capcom reported which 10 games sold the most during this period.
In 1st place, surprisingly, is Devil May Cry 5 (the Special Edition is included) with about 2.1 million sales. This brings the game to a total of nearly 10.8 million sales overall. The game was originally released on March 8, 2019 (the Special Edition on December 4, 2020). The Devil May Cry HD Collection lands in 7th place with about 754,000 sales from April to September 2025.
This falls exactly in the period after the series, which pushed the franchise back into the public eye. Considering that the 5th was also the last installment so far, this is still an impressive achievement. Regular sales on Steam and other platforms likely helped many fans.
Interestingly, in 10th place is Monster Hunter Wilds with nearly 640,000 sales. It sold even slightly worse than Monster Hunter Rise from April to September 2025. However, it should be noted that Wilds was released on February 28, 2025, and at its launch, the game celebrated almost 1.4 million concurrent players on Steam (via Steam). Therefore, the majority of sales occurred before the new fiscal year data.
As can be seen from the example of Devil May Cry, a video game adaptation can be worthwhile even for older titles, and potentially for sequels as well.
What’s next for Devil May Cry? A new installment has not been confirmed yet, but fans of the series can be happy, as the 2nd season is currently in production and is expected to be released in 2026. Dante’s brother Vergil will also finally be included.
