Mary hopes Pokémon could finally improve technology and open-world aspects
Especially compared to Scarlet and Violet, the open world of Palworld feels so much more vibrant. While I eventually just walked strictly from A to B in Pokémon, I constantly stray from the path in Palworld, exploring cavernous dungeons, climbing some mountain because there’s a flying creature I don’t have yet, or simply getting enchanted by the atmosphere in Autumn Hills.
Also in terms of technology, Pokémon could learn a thing or two. Of course, I do experience pop-ins or minor bugs in Palworld as well. Overall, and considering that the game was in early access until recently, Pokémon can really take a page from this regarding performance.
Dariusz wants to express his creativity – but prefers using mouse and keyboard
Control with mouse and keyboard
When Palworld was released, I was immediately a fan of being able to play this type of game with mouse and keyboard. It’s just more fun and feels more natural to aim at Pals with the mouse and then throw the Palsphere, rather than using the stick controls of the Switch. After the release of Palworld, the aforementioned controls of Pokémon Legends: Arceus became unbearable for me. I started the game 2–3 more times, but the gameplay felt so much worse due to the controls.
In addition to the mouse and keyboard controls on PC, I miss one important thing in the Pokémon games that I love about Palworld:
Base building or housing
In Generation 3 of Pokémon, we had secret bases, and in Generation 4, the underground. Both offered a form of housing with the chance to set up a small space of your own. Now, we travel the Pokémon world in 3D graphics and move through open worlds for the first time. So we could finally take a step further and introduce some sort of base-building or proper housing.
Pals can also be used in other ways. For example, as a mount if you have a suitable saddle. How cool would it be to glide through the water on a Gyarados, fly through the air on a Zapdos, or race across the plains on a Ponyta in every Pokémon game? While such a mount function does exist in some instances, like in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, it’s still too limited for us.
Additionally, Pokémon Pokopia has even released a game where Pokémon engage in gardening. It would also give me extra motivation to start the game more often after completing the story and simply allow me to express my creativity in building a base or decorating.
On page 3, we continue with opinions from Alex on the role of trainers in battles and from Benedikt on freedom in difficulty settings.
