Give your character a goal – or at least a purpose
Once you’ve built a character, chosen a race and a class, and want to dive into the adventure, you should ask yourself: What kind of adventure are you embarking on?
Sure, the actual story of your campaign is created by your DM or taken from an already existing setting. But you should ask yourself why your character is even going on a journey or agreeing to travel with a group of adventurers. What is their goal?
A goal gives your character’s journey purpose. It creates motivation, drive, and hope that can pull you out of the darkest moments of your campaign.
Some possible reasons and goals include:
- To protect someone, perhaps even someone from your group
- To take revenge on those who have thrown your life into chaos
- To become rich and famous
- To flee from something that has haunted you for a long time
- And yes – even if it sounds simple – to escape the mundane, generic life and experience an adventure.
Honestly, anything is better than nothing. Plus, having a goal gives you the opportunity to become a part of the story. And who doesn’t like that?
