The MMO Lite Danu: Rise of the Templars looks back on a turbulent development and has raised some alarms. However, the previous screenshots and trailers promise much potential.
The main key facts:
- Developer: Danu Games
- Genre: Open-World MMORPG Lite with medieval/fantasy setting
- Payment model: Buy2Play
- Status: Alpha testing phases for supporters have been ongoing for years
- Target release: April 8, 2027
- Product page on Steam
What makes the game special? So far, unfortunately, mainly a turbulent development history that might trigger some warning lights. Originally, Danu: Rise of the Templars was supposed to adopt a crypto/Web3 model under the name Avalon: Rise of the Templars. Sounds like a total disaster, right?
The good news: The developers have distanced themselves from this plan and have attempted a reboot under the new name and a Buy2Play model. However, it is still concerning that they offer supporter packages for up to 1,500 USD on the official Danu website.
Nevertheless, the game has evolved from a “NoGo” to a “I want to play” for me over time. I find the setting with the Knights Templar, the Arthurian legend, the fantasy elements, and the druid magic exciting. For example, you can find dragon eggs, raise your own dragon, and engage in aerial combat with it.
I also like the MMO Lite approach: About 50 players are supposed to be in a version of the world. You can explore the world alone or in coop and complete quests. Or you can build a home or a guild village, trade, try your hand at raids, start a business… the options and possibilities are said to be numerous.
When I read all the promises on Steam and look at the nice graphics in the trailers, I’m a bit worried that the developers might be overreaching with their ambitious project. I am very curious to see how Danu: Rise of the Templars will play during the first major test and whether it will stick to the release in April 2027.
