In League of Legends there are always situations where a champion becomes too strong or too weak and needs to be adjusted and reworked. This has been particularly drastic with 5 champions. Find out which 5 they are here on MeinMMO.
League of Legends has evolved over the years. Many of these developments come from community feedback, while others have been seen in esports and needed adjustment. LoL is a game that is constantly changing and evolving.
Constant graphical adjustments are made, and there is a new patch every few weeks and occasionally a new champion is completely reworked. The last major overhaul was that of Udyr. Because it was finished so close to the Worlds, the champion is not eligible.
What makes strong champions even stronger is their ultimate ability. The 5 champions on the list have mainly been reworked because of their ultimate ability. Udyr is special in terms of his ultimate ability because he can use it from level 1. Here you can see more about it:
Poppy – The Yordle with the huge hammer
What characterized the champion in the past? Poppy used to be a character who liked to fight 1vs1. With Poppy’s abilities, it was easy to attack the opponent under the tower and escape unharmed. Besides taking out easy targets, she could absorb all the damage at the front line without flinching.
Why did it need to be changed? Poppy’s ultimate ability had the effect of allowing her to choose an opponent to challenge to a duel and deal additional damage. Damage from other champions was blocked, even from towers or other opponents. This made Poppy unbeatable, and she could fight through all the ranks of enemies.
What can the champion do now? Poppy is the guardian of the hammer. Not without reason does she always swing her hammer with her. She spins the hammer in a circle until she slams it to the ground, knocking the affected enemies back towards the base.
Has it done the champion good? The playstyle of Poppy has changed with this adjustment. She is still a character who fights in the front lines, but she is no longer a solo fighter; she has become a team fighter. With her new ultimate ability, she can push away unimportant targets to clear the way for easier targets or force favorable situations.
Here you have the nostalgia factor of the old Dominion map, where Poppy’s abilities are demonstrated:
Sion – The Undead Moloch is now even more Undead
What characterized the champion in the past? Sion was already a fighter. However, his abilities also left options open for him to be played as a mage or full tank. This flexibility was a significant point when it came to Sion’s playstyle.
Why did it need to be changed? Sion’s ultimate ability gave him up to 100% lifesteal and 50% attack speed for 20 seconds. These are values that allowed him to stand in the enemy’s base under attack by the Nexus Obelisk as long as he had attacked anything.
Here you can find a clip about it:
What can the champion do now? Sion’s abilities have been completely reworked and have new effects. His passive ability makes him even more undead. So you can still run around the map and attack everything for a few seconds after death.
Additionally, he received an ultimate ability that does justice to his backstory and the rage that burns within him. The whole map knows what’s happening when Sion sets off and runs full of rage across half the map.
Has it done the champion good? The champion has now embraced his role. As a tank in the top lane, he usually contributes at the front lines of battle for his team. And even after his death, he remains a thorn in the side of his opponents. Always an ace up the sleeve for any top lane player.
Galio – The grieving Guardian becomes a Colossus
What characterized the champion in the past? Galio used to distinguish himself through his unique ability to be played against mages. This arose from the fact that 50% of his magic resistance was accounted for as ability power.
Why did it need to be changed? Galio’s ultimate ability has long been known as one of the strongest abilities in all of League of Legends. In addition to increased resistances, Galio attracted the focus of all opponents and exploded from his petrification after 2 seconds to deal damage to all opponents.
What can the champion do now? With his ultimate ability, Galio can rush to the aid of his teammates and hurls all surrounding opponents into the air. With the new abilities, Galio can help his team in critical situations while still being able to assert himself very well.
Has it done the champion good? The champion is now well-suited for the mid lane or top lane. There, the colossus shines with his powerful attacks. He is still played as a response against many mages but provides a more supportive playstyle than before the changes.
Mordekaiser – The Ruler over the Souls of the Dead
What characterized the champion in the past? Mordekaiser was a champion that could be included in almost any team. He handled well solo and was able to assist the team in his unique way. In 1vs1 situations, his abilities secured long survival for him, and he could emerge victorious from battles.
Why did it need to be changed? Mordekaiser’s ultimate ability allowed him to curse his opponent. For 10 seconds, they took continuous damage. If Mordekaiser or his team killed the cursed champion within the 10 seconds, he would rise again and fight alongside Mordekaiser.
But that’s not all. Mordekaiser also cursed the dragon, and when his team killed it, his ultimate ability was activated. The dragon would then follow him as a soul and attack with its normal attacks.
What can the champion do now? Mordekaiser is a champion who plays with the realm of the dead. With his necromantic abilities, he can draw enemies in for his team and attack with strong abilities. His ultimate ability pulls his opponent into another dimension, where they engage in an ultimate 1vs1 battle.
Has it done the champion good? Mordekaiser once had a very iconic ability that heavily tipped the balance between teams after a successful kill, even beyond their death. Currently, Mordekaiser is flexible on the rift and engages in 1vs1 battles on the map and with key objectives to give his team an advantage.
Urgot – Targeted killing used to be, now it’s execution
What characterized the champion in the past? Urgot was previously a mix of melee and ranged fighter. Additionally, he was feared when it came to killing opponents under their own tower.
Why did it need to be changed? Urgot had the ability to swap places with his opponent and gain resistances. Especially, this made it easier to kill the opponent under his tower. Moreover, he could poison opponents and shoot homing missiles that would hit the target directly.
What can the champion do now? The champion has become a pure melee champion with more range. His ultimate ability has been changed so that he must hit an opponent to execute them afterward. Otherwise, he has settled well in the top lane and competes with other champions at eye level.
Has it done the champion good? Before the rework, Urgot had great potential when it came to pulling out individual objectives. This has changed, and he now offers great potential both to fight against individual targets and to shine in large team fights.
League of Legends is constantly changing
What else has happened: In addition to the changes mentioned, there have been other champions that have also been adjusted, which we have not yet listed in detail. Here is just a small insight into the number of adjustments:
Starting with the overhaul of the map, different champions were adjusted to the new style. Below you will find a short video about the overhaul of the 5vs5 map: the Summoner’s Rift.
Some abilities had to be visually adjusted, while some champions received altogether new abilities that contributed to their current playstyle. Akali’s invisibility changed as part of an overall overhaul of invisibility. This also affected Twitch, Evelynn, and Shaco.
Some other champions whose ultimate abilities were adjusted or mechanics changed include: Vladimir, Irelia, Kayle, Fiora, and Katarina.
Further champion revisions are in the planning: In recent years, League of Legends has occasionally started polls regarding which champions are in line for revisions. Additionally, there are always wishes or ideas from the LoL team that want to make minor adjustments.
Announced changes so far have been for Neeko, Syndra, Aurelion Sol, Ahri, and after a survey at the beginning of the year, Skarner has been chosen. Skarner is expected to be the next big project after Udyr.
What MeinMMO author Mark Sellner thinks about it can be read here: For 5 years, LoL couldn’t lure me with new champions – for the “new” Udyr, I’m playing again right away
