Unlike the other revered deities in Japan, Yato does not have his own shrine. He is chronically broke and usually walks around in a worn-out tracksuit. This seems to make him envious, as his goal is to become the most popular, powerful, and richest god in Japan, surrounded by millions of followers and a lavish shrine.
However, this is just a pretext for another, deeper goal. If a god is forgotten, he ceases to exist. Therefore, Yato fights not to be forgotten by people, thus holding on to his existence.
To achieve his goal, he takes on all sorts of part-time jobs. From cleaning bathrooms to babysitting or fighting dangerous spirits, he does just about everything. For his services, he always asks for exactly 5 yen, which means saving for his own shrine may take a while.
