Wardogs is absolutely hyped, but you will have to wait a few more days until the release. Here are alternative shooters you can play until then.
What kind of game is this? Gray Zone Warfare
Why is this a Wardogs alternative? Gray Zone Warfare initially seems a bit out of place on this list. It is a PvPvE extraction shooter with a persistent server and a base on the map instead of an equipment screen in the game menu. You are an infantry soldier completing missions. The focus of the game is on realistic gameplay, which is reflected in the graphic style, weapon models, recoil, movement mechanics, and injuries.
However, due to the persistent existence of the map, Gray Zone Warfare fulfills an important aspect of the gameplay loop of Wardogs:
- In Wardogs, you spawn in your base, buy equipment, get flown by a Little Bird towards the zone, and fight there until you die.
- In Gray Zone Warfare, you also spawn in the base, and fly with a Little Bird into the operation area and fight until you die or return to the base. In Gray Zone Warfare, dying also costs you money, as you lose your valuable equipment.
The differences in Gray Zone Warfare are of course significant: Besides players, there are also plenty of NPC enemies on the map that can be very dangerous, and your goal is to complete missions and loot better equipment. In Wardogs, you fight for victory and thus for the zone. You can have a similar gameplay feeling in Gray Zone Warfare when you start a war at well-frequented loot spots on PvP servers, but you will not experience an “all-out warfare” battle with tanks, helicopters, and hundreds of players. And to my disappointment, we cannot control the Little Bird that flies us into the area in Gray Zone Warfare ourselves; that is taken care of by an NPC.
Flying helicopters in Wardogs was so much fun for me that I sometimes didn’t participate in the infantry battles for long periods. Personally, flying is something I do not want to miss in my Wardogs alternative. You can read my overall impression of playing the Wardogs beta here: I didn’t fire a single shot in a new PvP shooter on Steam for an hour, and it was the most exciting gameplay a game has offered me in 2026
