Identity
Setting: Modern / MMORPG | Developer: Asylum Entertainment | Platform: PC | Status: Development likely ceased | Year of Campaign: 2015 | Money raised through Kickstarter: $187,859 | Backers: 4,218
With Identity, the indie studio Asylum aimed to develop a modern open-world MMORPG that is essentially a cops-and-robbers game, but somehow also a life simulation. The focus was to be on immersion, immense freedom, and role-playing.
Players should not only be able to take on roles of cops or police officers. Taxi drivers, firefighters, beggars, judges… everything was possible, so the promise went. In the end, 300 to 500 players were supposed to be active on each server simultaneously (via identityrpg.com).
Initially, development seemed to be progressing well. Founder packages could be purchased, promising access to the game, and it launched in Early Access on Steam in December 2018. But now, in 2025, the Steam product page for the game is unavailable in Germany. And the last update from the developers was in August 2022. These are not good signs.
Project: Gorgon
Setting: Fantasy / MMORPG | Developer: Elder Game | Platform: PC | Status: Released on January 29, 2026 | Year of Campaign: 2015 | Money raised through Kickstarter: $74,781 | Backers: 1,318
While most games in this list have garnered the discontent of supporters in the meantime, Project: Gorgon is something of a fan favorite, with a total of 86 percent positive reviews on Steam. This is enough for the Top 10 of currently best-rated MMORPGs on Steam.
The indie MMORPG aims to transport you back to the times of EverQuest and Asheron’s Call. There are no predefined classes and the combat system relies on classic tab-targeting. The clear focus is on exploring the world, housing, open trading, and PvE content.
Perhaps it is the very old-school presentation that has caused only a few players to stray onto the servers for a long time. Only 677 simultaneously active MMORPG fans were logged in at the peak during Early Access.
With the launch on January 29, 2026, this has at least changed positively, albeit on a small scale.
Last weekend, the indie MMORPG attracted 3,483 players to the servers simultaneously. This has never happened for Project: Gorgon! The reviews remain positive. Therefore, Project: Gorgon is the first success story of the MMO year 2026. And this is despite the fact that the team suffered a severe loss at the beginning of 2025: A popular MMORPG on Steam has sad news for the community
