The King of YouTube, Mr. Beast, hosted a tournament in Fortnite : the Extreme Challenge Fortnite Tournament. In the end, a 20-year-old Dane came out on top. However, not everyone agrees with Anas’s victory: “normal players” find it annoying that a professional won, who has already earned good money with Fortnite over the last two years.
What kind of tournament was it? On Saturday, December 17th, an unusual Fortnite tournament took place, hosted by Mr. Beast:
- The winner received one million US dollars
- For the top 100,000 in the tournament, there was at least an exclusive “Beast Brella Umbrella” included.
The developer of Fortnite, Epic Games, said: You can play as many matches as you can within the time: only the game with the highest score counts. The winner then wins one million US dollars.
In the tournament, players had to dodge “storms”, could collect coins, and had to score as many points as possible before the timer ran out.
It didn’t have much to do with the “normal Fortnite”, which is played as Battle Royale, but rather looked like Fall Guys in Fortnite clothing.
Who won? In the end, the Danish Fortnite pro Anas emerged victorious. He plays for David Beckham’s clan “The Guild”.
He scored a total of 142,098 points, placing him well over 1,500 points ahead of a player from Holland and another from Canada.
He is said to have trained for the tournament throughout the week and was able to deliver his best performance when it counted.
Some call for excluding pros from cash tournaments
How is this being discussed? The tournament is a bit strange because only the 1st place wins so much money and the rest go home empty-handed. The comments are therefore divided.
While many congratulate the winner, calling it a great achievement, there are also some voices that find it unfair that a pro won:
- “Honestly, it’s unfair that a pro gamer won – I was also in the top percent, so I’m not super angry. But how about doing some cash tournaments and excluding pro players?”
- “That’s just great … the winner is a sweaty, rich Fortnite pro. As always, the rich get richer – Mister Beast is a joke!”
- “I personally believe that they should have excluded pros and creators from the tournament. The skill gap, equipment, and connection definitely play a role. The man literally won $400,000 in the last few years, but it was still a tough task. GG, it was fun.”
The winner earned $430,000 with Fortnite in 2021 and 2020
What’s so bitter about it? Well, the 20-year-old Anas has already earned $430,000 in tournaments with Fortnite in the last two years before the win, consistently placing in the top 5 at the FNCS, the online esports tournament for Fortnite, earning between $125,000 and $25,000.
The additional one million US dollars is certainly nice, but some might have needed the money more. Therefore, one can understand the criticism, especially from amateur players: Anas, as a pro player, obviously has much better conditions to win such a competition than normal players.
Ultimately, however, this is a sports competition; one cannot really complain about Messi winning at the World Cup, who has already achieved so much in his life:
