Finding a job can become a real challenge. A Gen Z woman has solved her problem with a cap. By doing this, she was able to show potential employers that she deserved a chance.
Finding a job can become a real challenge, especially for young people facing AI and high demands from companies. Dozens of rejections on applications are not uncommon, if one even receives a rejection.
A young Gen Z graduate faced a similar situation. But after receiving no response to over 100 applications, she decided to resort to an unusual method: wearing a baseball cap with her university’s name on it while delivering pizza.
A university baseball cap helps a student land an internship and then a job
What exactly did she do? In a conversation with Fortune magazine, she reports that while delivering pizza, she needed to give customers a reason to consider her as a potential employee. Therefore, she decided to wear a baseball cap with her university name on it.
She explained that she had to deliver pizza in a wealthy neighborhood in Washington. There lived many potential employers, and she just had to show them that she could be an interesting employee.
When she was approached about her cap, she was able to engage customers in conversation and point out that she was currently looking for an internship. And she was right: after a month, she impressed the right person who could provide her with the appropriate internship. As she puts it herself:
In the end, someone gave me a chance because they appreciated my tenacity, determination, and willingness to ask for what I so desperately wanted. I got the job, and my last shift in the store was already the following week.
These experiences helped me to get my current job. If I hadn’t worn that cap and hadn’t gotten that first internship, I don’t know where I would have ended up today.
By now, she works as a PR manager in the communications team of a large company.
Overall, Generation Z is considered to be very well educated: Some have really good, high-quality degrees and therefore hope for a well-paid job in their field. However, high qualifications have not only advantages: Generation Z is the best-educated generation in history: Unfortunately, it is also the most overqualified in the job market
