Some of you might know the situation: You’re a child, your parents are long asleep, but you’re gaming late into the night, even though you should actually be in bed. In the case of a 10-year-old, this disobedience might have saved her family’s life.

Elizabeth “Lizyy” Morgan is a 10-year-old girl from Oakley, California, who probably enjoys playing video games, and does so late into the night.
A few days ago, it happened again. Lizzy was sitting in front of the screen, even though she should have been asleep long ago. The house was quiet because the rest of the family was already in bed. Suddenly, however, the power went out and the 10-year-old became suspicious. Something seemed off.

Fortunate in Misfortune and a Proud Mother
What happened? Lizzy checked what might be the cause of the power outage. She quickly discovered that there was a fire in the house. Her mother later told that her daughter ran screaming through the house, waking the other family members.
The four adults and three children who were in the house were able to escape from the burning building and came through the incident unhurt. Unfortunately, two dogs and a cat lost their lives in the fire.
Lizzy’s mother Nena regrets the loss of her pets and the house where the family had lived for 14 years. Many personal belongings were destroyed in the fire.
In contrast to her daughter, the mother feels only pride and gratitude:
I find Elizabeth absolutely heroic, because I don’t know if we would have made it if we had all been asleep. One of our dogs died from smoke inhalation, it happened so fast! So yes, Lizzy is my hero. […] I am proud that she stayed calm. I am proud that she just knew what to do and held it together while being surrounded by smoke and flames.
There is already an online fundraising campaign for the family. The people in Oakley also want to help with food and clothing to support the rebuilding and fresh start.
