After a leak, it’s now official: The release date of Wrath of the Lich King for WoW Classic is September 27, 2022. A short trailer is supposed to get you excited for the upcoming expansion.
When is the release? As Blizzard revealed in a tweet and a somewhat longer blog post, WotLK Classic is set to launch on September 27 at 12:01 AM German time. This confirms the leak, and you now have just about 2 months to prepare for the release.
WotLK is considered by many players to be one of the best expansions of World of Warcraft or even the absolute peak of WoW. The addon introduced Arthas, one of the most popular antagonists from Warcraft, as the final boss of the expansion.
Currently, you’ll receive 50% bonus experience in Burning Crusade Classic to prepare. TBC will be disabled at the release of WotLK and will no longer be available, at least for now. Unlike Classic, there won’t be any “BC Era” servers.

Here are the features: With Wrath of the Lich King, a new class and the first hero class of WoW was introduced, the Death Knight. This class had its own starting area and did not have to start at level 1 like all the others, but instead began at level 55.
Over time, much has changed about the Death Knight; its complicated rune system and talents have been greatly simplified. WotLK Classic will however bring back the tougher version of the Death Knight. Other features of the expansion include:
- Level 80 as the new maximum level
- Northrend as the new area with Dalaran as the capital
- The Icecrown Citadel as the final major raid with Arthas as the main boss
You will start your journey in Northrend either in the Boreal Tundra or in the Howling Fjord and then fight through the areas until you reach Icecrown, where ultimately Arthas will await you.
By the way, Arthas met his final end only in the current expansion Shadowlands.
What changes compared to earlier? As with Classic and TBC, WotLK will also launch with the last patch 3.3.5. This means that many bugs have already been fixed and class balancing is somewhat improved. Death Knights are no longer absolutely dominant, but still one of the strongest classes. Additionally, several other things have changed compared to earlier:
- The “Quest Helper” is no longer available, so quests will be a bit more challenging
- There are some changes to Naxxramas, the first raid in WotLK
- The Dungeon Finder will not be included, it simply doesn’t fit the community
- Additionally, there will be some adjustments to make boosting less attractive
Otherwise, WotLK Classic should closely resemble the expansion you remember from 2008. And one of the most coveted mounts from WoW will definitely be available again: Invincible, the undead horse of Arthas Menethil. This mount is still farmed today and brings honest nerd joy:
