An expansion is much more popular than any other in World of Warcraft. It should not be hard to guess which one it is.
There are very few games that have such a long lifespan as World of Warcraft. Meanwhile, Blizzard’s MMORPG is rapidly approaching its 9th expansion and will take us to the Dragon Isles. However, a few days ago, we reflected back and wanted to ask you in a survey which era of World of Warcraft was the best of all time. A total of 4,474 readers participated and shared their opinions with us.
We could now claim that it was a close “neck-and-neck” race between two expansions – but that would simply be a lie. You know what you like, and it is clearly Wrath of the Lich King.
Almost half of you celebrate Wrath of the Lich King
Of the over 4,400 votes, a total of 2,031 voted for “Wrath of the Lich King”. With a proud result of 45% of all votes, the journey to Northrend easily lands in first place.
For many, Wrath of the Lich King was the continuation of the campaign from Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne and thus the end of the Arthas saga. It was a worthy conclusion to a great story and also brought forth the new class of Death Knight.

WotLK is unmatched for me. Technical advancement with a lot of phasing, better and more continuous story than its predecessors, great areas, dungeons, and raids. Arthas as the main theme was just awesome!
Additionally, Wrath of the Lich King was also the entry point for many players into World of Warcraft – never again did the MMORPG have as many subscribers as it did during the peak in Icecrown.
Every 5th person sees Legion as the best addon
In second place, clearly trailing behind, with 20% of all votes (881) is the expansion Legion.
Legion already had the natural bonus of appearing right after a poorly received expansion “Warlords of Draenor”. However, the expansion also celebrated quite a spectacle. Almost all major and minor characters from the entire WoW history made an appearance again. Every class had its own campaign, and there were legendary weapons like the Ashbringer or new favorites like Xal’atath.
Additionally, with Suramar, there was a very strong endgame area that felt fresh for several weeks.
Strong, emotional story moments, such as the death of Tirion Fordring or the green dragon aspect Ysera, further ensured that Legion would long be remembered.
The Burning Crusade lands in 3rd place
In 3rd place with 12% of the votes (520), The Burning Crusade narrowly reaches the podium. “TBC” was the first expansion of World of Warcraft and ensured that the rough flaws of the base game were corrected. Heroic dungeons provided more incentives to continue visiting them.
Of course, the Draenei and Blood Elves are also unforgettable. Especially the latter ensured that the Horde finally had a “pretty” race, which led to a large influx of new characters – not to mention that shamans and paladins were now available to both factions.
The Burning Crusade is also remembered for several extremely long and (for the time) complex boss fights. Whether against Lady Vashj, Kael’thas Sunstrider, or Illidan in the Black Temple – the raid bosses left a mark and still have some of the prettiest weapons or mounts to this day.
Shadowlands lands in last place
If you have observed the developments of recent years, it should not be surprising that Shadowlands was not well received by large parts of the player base. With just 1% of the votes, Shadowlands lands in last place, even trailing behind the already unpopular Warlords of Draenor. Here are the last places at a glance:
- 4th place: Mists of Pandaria (11%, 495 votes)
- 5th place: Cataclysm (4%, 166 votes)
- 6th place: World of Warcraft Vanilla (4%, 161 votes)
- 7th place: Battle for Azeroth (2%, 89 votes)
- 8th place: Warlords of Draenor (2%, 70 votes)
- 9th place: Shadowlands (1%, 61 votes)
