Fans of games like Professor Layton or Yo-kai Watch would have a great chance of getting a raise at the Japanese game developer Level-5. The developer regularly holds Q&A sessions.
What kind of quiz is this? In an interview with the Japanese magazine Famitsu, Akihiro Hino, the President and CEO of Level-5, revealed that they test new employees with a quiz about their own games.
If we do not really appreciate things like philosophy and instead focus on superficial expertise, we risk rejecting the right candidates during the first interview. We also apply this kind of “employee selection” to our current employees to assess how well they understand the company’s content.
Those who perform well in this knowledge test would receive a raise regardless of their career level, even newcomers. In the interview, Hino also mentions the exact amount that astonishes the interviewers. And as if that weren’t enough, the developer is even considering increasing that amount.
This way, the developers would experience their own game “Professor Layton” live. After all, puzzles are also hosted here that players need to solve. Unfortunately, there is no real cash reward for this.
Trust is good, control is more expensive
Why is such a quiz even held? According to Kino, in video game development, it is important to trust someone with a task who is familiar with the respective game.
If the knowledge is lacking, the person would need support and control from other team members. This is not necessary if the required knowledge is already present. This way, such a person can take on a central role and make the work more efficient.
The salary increase would also compensate for the operating costs that would arise from additional controls and efficiency losses.
This way, the game developer counters the general trend in the video game industry. Currently, numerous employees are being laid off across different companies. Currently, Xbox employees are also fearing for their jobs: Xbox employees are resisting impending mass layoffs
