Who is it about? Markus Alexej Persson is a Swedish game developer who became known as the creator of Minecraft under the name “Notch”.
The 43-year-old released the first version of the survival hit in March 2009, which he worked on alone. He initially developed the game as a hobby in his free time, before leaving his job behind in 2010 to work full-time on Minecraft.
The game surprisingly received great acclaim from Notch and sold numerous copies. So well, in fact, that PayPal froze his account because he had to prove that the money was earned with Minecraft (via jeuxvideo).
Over time, Notch then founded the still-existing development studio “Mojang,” which he sold to Microsoft in 2014 for 2.5 billion US dollars, including Minecraft.
How successful is Minecraft? Minecraft is one of the largest and most popular games of all time. As of April 2021, Minecraft has sold over 238 million copies worldwide (via. Xbox.com). However, Minecraft is not only enjoyed by many players; its mega-success also attracts numerous viewers.
On Twitch, Minecraft was the 8th most-watched game in the past 365 days. Viewers watched the survival title for an incredible 559,661,098 hours during this period (via sullygnome). Furthermore, the game is also a huge success on YouTube, and gaming stars like Gronkh started their successful careers with Minecraft. For example, episode 001 of Gronkh’s Minecraft “Let’s Play” garnered a strong 17 million views by January 2023.
Even the Minecraft trailer has impressive numbers, with over 160 million clicks. In the comments, there are sentences like “This game writes history in everyone’s childhood”.
