A trailer for the popular sandbox adventure Minecraft has over 160 million views and player comments show just how big the title really is.
How popular is Minecraft? Minecraft is undoubtedly one of the largest and most popular games of all time. As of April 2021, Microsoft announced that Minecraft has sold over 238 million copies worldwide and has up to 139 million active players monthly (via. Xbox.com).
The game is also well-watched on Twitch. Over the past 30 days, Minecraft has been watched for 67,619,410 hours, ranking 5th among all Twitch categories, ahead of CS:GO and Dota 2. Only GTA 5, LoL, Valorant, and “Just Chatting” have a higher watch time (via. Sullygnome).
The popularity is also reflected in the trailer on YouTube. It has not only 162 million views, but also 144,500 comments and 1.6 million likes.
‘A place where the only limit is your imagination’
What does the trailer show? The trailer showcases exactly what makes Minecraft special: the incredible sandbox. The first words of the narrator highlight the creative freedom of the game:
‘Let’s go to a place where everything is made of blocks, where the only limit is your imagination.’
Next, we see the cherished gameplay aspects of the game in the 1-minute trailer: ‘Go wherever you want and build whatever you want. Play with friends and create your own community.’ – all statements directed at players from the trailer released in 2011.
Players thank for memories and fun
What do the players say? If we look at the comments on YouTube under the trailer today, they are certainly different from those during a new game announcement.
We would have to search long to find comments like ‘That looks interesting, I’ll keep an eye on that game’ or similar ones. The commentators are primarily players expressing how much they love Minecraft.
There are also many players thanking Minecraft for the memories, the friends they made, and the good times with the game.
