In Valorant, a player from a clearly inferior team tried a desperate trick. By faking a message from the developers, he made his naive opponents surrender voluntarily in a ranked game.
What happened? On reddit, a noticeably angry player posted about how he was tricked and lost what seemed to be a guaranteed round. They were leading 7:5 and were generally better than the opposing team.
This was especially significant as it was a match in ranked mode. Every win counts, and losing can mean dropping in rank, forcing players to fight their way back up. Therefore, the competition for victory is particularly fierce.
But suddenly, in the middle of the game, an alleged message from the developers appeared:
Due to recent reports, Riot has now taken action against one of your teammates in your current game. According to the Vanguard policies, this match will not affect your current rank, and if you surrender, it will not impact your matchmaking. We apologize for this inconvenience.
Players surrender dutifully and are very upset
Here’s how it went on: In fact, the players from the leading team believed this message and surrendered. Later it turned out: It was all fake. The player from the opposing team, who also had the least kills, had posted the message in the chat and hoped the opponent would fall for it.
Since they did, they lost the game, and the trickster’s team was spared a possible defeat and loss of rank points. Coincidentally, the player who sent the message was also playing as Cypher, a character known for tricks and confusion.
Here’s how the victims reacted: The mood among the deceived players was understandably bad. The secure game was gone, and there were indeed losses in ranking. In a reddit post, one of the affected players lamented loudly:
My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined. We were in a hard-fought game and were winning 7:5. Your bottom-fragger (Cypher) faked a message in all chats saying: “Due to recent reports, this match will not be counted towards your MMR and a surrender will have no impact.” All I can say is that I hate life.
On reddit, the player received further ridicule: “It’s like seeing a button on the internet that says, ‘You have a virus, click here to get rid of it.'” Another reader remarked, “How is it possible that all five of you fell for it?”
Others sympathized with the victim and showed solidarity. Such tricks seem to be quite popular, and many players have fallen for similar actions. However, should a cheater actually be present in a team and become noticeable, some players have a similar attitude. Once, there was a situation where the team banded together to troll the cheater until they all lost.
